When city planners envisioned a subway for Beirut

1) 1968 USSR study
“A team of 4 engineers spent one month studying travel patterns and were able to come up with a preliminary plan for multiple metro lines for the city, including typical cross sections, ridership numbers, etc. at an estimated cost of 250-280 million USD, rolling stock included”, Nabil Nakkash, a researcher in transport, reported on LinkedIn in 2016.

2) 1995 ‘Greater Beirut Transportation Plan’. Done in partnership with French agencies, one of the long-term scenarios had a 38-km commuter rail service line from Jounieh to Damour, in addition to two metro lines.

⋯ Mass transport started with the tramway. Built in 1908 by a Belgian company, its length was 12 km, with 3 lines.

The trams were removed to make way for cars. Like in the West, the time of urban highways had come. But unlike Paris escaping its ‘Plan autoroutier’, Beirut rolled out the 4-lane motorways and tunnels. The tramway was fully decommissioned in 1968, replaced by buses. Next, the civil war and Israeli invasions damaged all infrastructure. (Photo: Beirut El-Balad, 1965)
