The king of Morocco was spotted drunk in France. King Mohammad rules over a nation of 35 million Muslims.
One week after the video of King Mohammed VI sparked outrage and speculation, the palace reacted via its spokesman, Abdelhak Lamrini:
“The king was walking through the streets of Paris, and when he turned around to greet people, he almost lost his balance and leaned on his bodyguards. He didn’t have a glass of wine, but a bottle of water in his hand.”
The video is genuine and new, but Lamrini warned that it is intended to “tarnish the king’s image”. Moroccan website Hespress had immediately blamed “a new Algerian attempt to insult King Mohammed VI and a systematic move to attack the Kingdom of Morocco”.
It remains unclear why the king was late at night dressed in blue denim in the streets of Paris, but the Spanish newspaper El Español noted that he celebrated his 59th birthday on 21 August. This date is considered a national holiday, and is called the “Youth Festival”, but for the fourth consecutive year there were no official celebrations in Morocco.
