Knesset discusses death penalty for Arabs, amid hostage crisis
The Knesset has discussed today a bill to execute any “person who deliberately or carelessly causes the death of an Israeli citizen, when the act is motivated by racism or hostility towards the Jewish public, and with the aim of harming the State of Israel” (hence applicable only to non-Jews).
Introduced by Minister Ben-Gvir's party today, the bill was initially approved 55-9 in March 2023 but the process stalled. Ben-Gvir says “we must carry out the provisions of the law in relation to those Nazis of Nukhba [Hamas special forces]”. The Israeli law fixes death penalty for Nazis (Eichmann in 1962) and would impose it on Palestinian prisoners from Gaza.
Families of hostages held in Gaza said this debate is a “mental terror attack”. Critics say it is aimed at derailing potential exchange deals with Hamas. Coalition Chairman Ofir Katz (Likud) promised the bill would not be brought to the plenum to be voted on.
