✍️ An X thread yesterday reminded me of the point here, about Hezbullah self limiting itself.
This point is underappreciated and its impact is rather very big. Back when fighting in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, or anywhere else, Hezbullah knew the homefront was safe.
Lebanon, Beirut, south Lebanon, the Homefront was safe, the people were safe, and so was their lifelihood and their existence.
Because of that, Hezbullah was able to mount offensives against Syria rebels, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and everyone else with ease. Hezbullah moved armies between countries and it's fair to say they almost moved mountains that stood in their path.
They were (and still are) men of war who won any challenge.
But this time, it's different. Not Hezbullah, but the conditions that dedicate how Hezbullah acts.
To understand how Hezbullah, whose smallest rocket launcher is 20 slots, is firing barely few rockets in some attacks, and to understand how/why Hezbullah hasn't destroyed Israeli settlements or attacked with more intensity...is to understand Hezbullah wants to protect the homefront.
Hezbullah doesn't want to burden this homefront that barley exited a very harsh and devastating economic collapse and political instability. The homefront is too sacred and cherished to be risked immaturely.
This is why Hezbullah self limited itself, accepted more damage than it is causing, and had to resort to unorthodox tactics to engage the Israeli army to achieve some goals and reserve ability.
Hezbullah was successful in limiting the army resources in Gaza, forcing settlers to evacuate, destroying army gear and assets...all to a limited impact on the army and events.
Hezbullah is ready for an extended war with the enemy, and they have been prepared for long and they are now prepared to go forward...
The only issue is, the goal is to end the war in Gaza not to expand the war. But that's something the Israeli leadership isn't planning to do, and despite the heroic resistance in Gaza surviving this long, it's a ticking time bomb. Any day could cause enough damage, which wasn't done in months of effort.
That, and the ever increasing heavy toll the Israeli army is inflicting on Hezbullah.
That, while the Israeli army continues to hide its soldiers away from the current frontline in Lebanon, denying Hezbullah any targets in the current level of escalation.
Hezbullah isn't attacking this few number of times per day because they decided to, the reality is the number of available legitimate targets to engage are limited. It's so easy to fire one projectile towards empty bases and fields and claim two dozen attacks. But Hezbullah isn't trying to win a war on social media.
The Israeli army is acting very arrogantly and viciously in Lebanon, with full destruction of villages and targeted assassinations. It's quite sorrowful that some are being martyred just few days into their deployment.
But with the current trajectory of events, it's very clear that the situation cannot stay so for long. There cannot be stability based on this instability. How things progress will be very delicate and wil have ripple effects on many things to come.
Hezbullah will not launch a war against the Israeli army, and it will only engage in one the moment the Israeli army does that to Lebanon. This was stated by his eminence.
It'll be interesting days, ones full of pride and misery, but those are destined; moments that influence a future that was never going to escape bloodshed.
