In English, a ‘kill zone’ is how military and police officers describe a combat zone or crime scene where deadly force could happen.

In Gaza, ‘kill zones’ are not ambushes to trap Hamas, but simply any areas surrounding IDF positions. “In every combat zone, commanders define such kill zones”, a reserve officer tells Haaretz.

“As soon as people enter it, mainly adult males, orders are to shoot and kill, even if that person is unarmed”, he continues. Significant discretion is given to commanders to decide whether to open fire on people near a kill zone.

It is almost impossible for civilians to know whether they are entering one, as their boundaries are not determined in advance.

Officers admitted that some Palestinians may have been going back to their homes or searching for food.

And “to a large extent, the event in which three hostages were killed by the IDF is such a story”, Haaretz writes, “since in fleeing from their captors, the three entered a kill zone in the middle of the Shujaiyeh neighborhood of Gaza City”.

While the Israeli army says it has killed 9,000 ‘terrorists’, “In practice, a terrorist is anyone the IDF has killed in the areas in which its forces operate”, an officer tells Haaretz.

”It's astonishing to hear the reports after every operation regarding how many terrorists were killed. You don't need to be a genius to realise that you don't have hundreds or dozens of armed men running through the streets of Khan Younis or Jabalia fighting the IDF”, says a senior officer.
