Particular sets of circumstances can turn ammonium nitrate from a stable compound into an explosive — without any fuel or external catalyst.

The material produces heat as it decomposes, similar to the way a rotting material in a compost heap produces heat. With sufficient quantity, it can generate enough heat to catch fire.

As it burns, ammonium nitrate goes through chemical changes that lead to the production of oxygen, precisely what a fire needs to grow bigger. As temperatures rise up, it will fuse and liberate nitrous oxide (gas), being caught inside. The gas has nowhere to go. Eventually, the gas violently breaks through, heats up and triggers a chain of similar reactions that constitutes the explosion.
