Happy holidays and hope everyone has a wonderful 2026!
Today I learnt that while most bees are diurnal (active during the day) there are 250 or so species that are nocturnal (nighttime) and/or crepuscular (active at dawn/dusk)! This is Megalopha genalis, a nocturnal bee found on Central and South America and a model species for studying night vision on bees. Although their eyes are quite similar to those of other bees, they have several adaptations which make them 27 times more sensitive to light, as well as neural adaptations that make them better at processing and navigating low-light conditions. 🌟✨
