🎙 Acting Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at the wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial plaques at the Foreign Ministry (Moscow, May 8, 2024)
💬 Today, according to tradition, we celebrate Great Victory Day, May 9, a day that will never be gone from our memory, a day when we commemorate those who protected Russia, Europe and the world from Nazism and pay tribute to their heroism.
We are proud that diplomats were among the heroes who resisted the enemy, weapon in hand, or worked to support their Motherland on the home front, addressing economic tasks. After the war, they spared no effort to create a just international system, in which the USSR – our state, our nation – would take its rightful place, which was due to us according to historical justice. This is how the United Nations was created.
🏅 I would like to repeat that employees of the People’s Commissariat for Foreign Affairs and our colleagues from the People’s Commissariat for Foreign Trade contributed to that victory on all fronts. Many of them became victims of political repression. We will always remember this. <...>
☝️ The descendants of Napoleon and Hitler have joined the Anglo-Saxons, again seeking to inflict a “strategic defeat” on our country, destroy it and subordinate it to their narrow selfish hegemonic interests. <...> Our soldiers on the front line, the people who provide them with weapons and equipment, as well as others, who are fostering the correct perception of our just struggle in the international arena, are definitely continuing the cause of our fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers.
🌐 The countries of the global majority know that Russia is fighting for everyone who wants to make their own choices and follow their own traditions, who do not want to see any manifestations of Nazism, racial or religious discrimination. The West is constantly pushing its satellites and puppets to this.

🎙 Acting Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks and answers to questions during a joint news conference with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Sierra Leone Timothy Musa Kabba following talks (Moscow, May 7, 2024)
💬 We conducted substantive Russia-Sierra Leone talks. We share the view that today’s meeting was timely and confirms our mutual striving to continue strengthening the traditionally friendly bilateral relations on the principles of equality and mutual respect.
<...>
We are interested in the implementation of the African Solutions − for African Problems principle.
<...>
☝️ We maintain good cooperation on implementing the agreements reached during the two Russia-Africa summits. In accordance with a decision of the St Petersburg Summit in July 2023, the Russia-African Union foreign ministers will hold their first meeting next November. We hope that our friends will be represented at the proper level.
We confirmed our gratitude for Sierra Leone’s position of principle on the issues related to the situation around Ukraine. It developed because of the hybrid war that the West was preparing for a long time with a view to weakening our country, creating threats to its security and depriving millions of Russian speakers in Crimea and Donbass of their lawful rights.
<...>
🤝 We are grateful to our African friends, in part Sierra Leone, for their well-balanced position and understanding of the reasons that had brought about the current situation. I am pleased about today’s negotiations.
❓ Question: Does the Foreign Ministry plan to open new diplomatic missions in African countries in 2024, including the Russian Embassy in Sierra Leone?
💬 Sergey Lavrov: We are going to open new diplomatic offices in Africa, including Freetown before the end of 2024. We have adopted all required decisions and it remains to fulfil them. We are working on this in practical terms.

🗓 May 8, the eve of the Great Victory, marks the 57th Anniversary (unveiled in 1967) of the official ceremony of lighting the sacred Eternal Flame at the unveiled Tomb of the Unknown Soldier memorial architectural ensemble in Alexander Garden near the Moscow Kremlin Wall.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier serves as a symbolic monument to honour frontline soldiers killed in action during the Great Patriotic War. It was proposed by officials in 1966, on the 25th anniversary of defeating Nazi forces near Moscow. On December 3, 1966, the remains of a Soviet soldier killed near Zelenograd were laid to rest in Alexander Garden.
⭐️ The Eternal Flame of Glory burns in front of the tombstone, at the centre of a five-pointed star, and illuminates a bronze innoscription that reads: “Your Name is Unknown, Your Feat is Immortal.”
In 1997, the President of Russia issued an executive order to establish a guard of honour post near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. In 2009, another presidential executive order granted the status of a nationwide military glory memorial to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in order to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of the Russian Federation. The memorial was included in the State List of Particularly Valuable Cultural Heritage Landmarks and Sites of Russia’s Peoples. On December 3, 2014, the day when the defender of Moscow was buried in Alexander Garden in 1966, was proclaimed the Day of the Unknown Soldier.

🎙 President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin's remarks at the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting in restricted format (Moscow, May 8, 2024):
💬 We note with satisfaction that over the past decade our association has established itself as an independent and self-sufficient centre of the emerging multipolar world.
Today, the Eurasian Union is an effective and dynamic integration structure whose activities contribute to the growth of trade and investment exchanges, intensification of business contacts, and expansion of cooperation ties, which ultimately brings real benefits to each association member.
Just now, before entering this room, my colleagues and I talked about it and stated that our economic development indicators are very good.
In actual practice, it helps ensure stable and sustainable development both of the five member countries and the Eurasian region as a whole, and results in improving the quality of life and well-being of our people.
📈 The economic indicators speak for themselves:
• according to available estimates, over the ten years the total GDP of the Eurasian Union countries went from US$1.6 to US$2.5 trillion,
• trade with third countries increased by 60 percent, from US$579 to US$923 billion,
• the volume of mutual trade almost doubled: from US$45 to US$89 billion, with over 90 percent of settlements already made in national currencies.
It is noteworthy that positive macroeconomic dynamics continue this year.
Let me stress that Russia highly values mutually beneficial multifaceted ties with its EAEU partners, and sincerely aims to further work towards comprehensive development and strengthening of our integration association. I am confident that all the colleagues present here share this commitment.

Following a successful assault on Berlin by the Red Army, Adolf Hitler committed suicide. The noscript of Reich President and command of the armed forces of the Third Reich passed to Admiral Karl Dönitz.
Desperate to surrender to the British-American troops, on May 5, German delegation arrived in the French city of Reims, where the headquarters of the Western Allies command was located.
In the Article 4 of the Reims Instrument of Surrender of Nazi Germany stated that this document did not rule out the signing of another, definitive act at the request of one of the coalition members.
Thus, the document was recognised by the Soviet Union only as a preliminary instrument, and a new signing ceremony was proposed to be held in the capital of Nazi Germany, liberated by the Red Army - Berlin.
On May 9, 1945, at 2:10 am Moscow time, announcer Yury Levitan read out the Instrument of Unconditional Surrender of Nazi Germany and the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR declaring May 9 Victory Day. From that moment on, the Soviet Union and later Russia, as well as the most former Soviet republics have celebrated Victory Day on May 9.
💬 Sergey Lavrov: This year’s Victory Day has a special significance because we are celebrating this great holiday in a situation where Nazism is rearing its head again. The descendants of Napoleon and Hitler have joined the Anglo-Saxons, again seeking to inflict a “strategic defeat” on our country, destroy it and subordinate it to their narrow selfish hegemonic interests. Just like our fathers and grandfathers volunteered to the front, today, once again, we see an extraordinary upsurge in society, as Russians are rallying to another sacred battle.

🎙 President of Russia Vladimir Putin’s remarks at the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting in expanded format (Moscow, May 8, 2024)
💬 The Eurasian Union has proven its effectiveness in the face of new challenges, including those related to the sanctions policies pursued by some countries and the dismantling of many of the basic pillars of international trade.
We are constantly fine-tuning the EAEU institutions and mechanisms, thus making it possible to adapt to changes and develop dynamically, despite the downturn in the global economy.
We have managed to achieve tangible results in creating a favourable investment climate in the EAEU. This was facilitated by joint decisions to protect investments, support businesses, and guarantee entrepreneurs’ rights.
Much has been done and is being done to promote industrial cooperation, import substitution and strengthen technological sovereignty of the member states. In particular, last year, at the initiative of the Russian presidency, a public-funding mechanism was launched for knowledge-intensive projects implemented by enterprises from the EAEU countries.
<…>
It has been repeatedly emphasised that the Eurasian Economic Union and all our integration activities are attracting attention of a growing number of international players. Many foreign states and large regional structures such as the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are expressing interest in developing ties with the EAEU.

🎙️Russian Embassy comment on London's restrictive measures targeting Russian diplomatic missions in the UK
▪︎On 8 May London announced new restrictive measures that drastically impede the functioning of Russian diplomatic missions in the United Kingdom, including interrupting communication channels.
▪︎As has often been the case, the new measures were introduced under a groundless and somewhat ridiculous pretext (in this case - a fire at a warehouse in east London), which is being twisted to invent yet another espionage story.
▪︎Meanwhile notable signs pointing to the preparation of these hostile steps appeared about six months ago. Since then a smear campaign to accuse us of absolutely every conceivable sin has been advanced with increasing intensity.
☝️It is deeply regrettable that at times of acute international tensions, when dialogue is of particular importance to prevent further escalation, London continues to demonstrate belligerence and undermine remaining ties.
❗These measures will inevitably be met with an adequate response from the Russian side.

Forwarded from Russian Mission to EU
💬Like the negotiations on all the previous thirteen “packages” of restrictions against Russia, the work on yet another one promises to be difficult. This is further evidenced by the fact that the European Commission has decided not to make public the set of sanctions proposals that it put forward for discussion by the European capitals.
At this stage, there is little point in speculating on what the "package" will ultimately consist of. At the moment, it looks more like a compilation of "wish lists" on which, as usual, consensus will be difficult to reach. Take LNG, for example - given the high dependence of a number of Member States on its supply, it may take a while to find a common denominator.
❗️The future “package” will be seriously affected by the extraordinary scale of the fight against so-called “Russian disinformation”. I doubt that the European bureaucracy realises the very negative consequences this could have for freedom of speech and democracy in the EU itself. What is presented as sanctions against our country is at the same time turning into an EU tool for manipulating European public opinion.
Another interesting point is that while the EU originally planned to adopt the 14th "package" before the European Parliament elections on 6-9 June 2024, it now seems to be aiming to agree on it by July. This proves once again that the next round of sanctions, like all the previous ones, will have extremely negative consequences for the EU economy, businesses and ordinary citizens. The European bureaucracy clearly sees no interest in making announcements before the EU-wide elections about new difficulties that Europe will inevitably face.

8️⃣0️⃣ years ago, the Red Army launched its Crimean offensive, liberating German-occupied Sevastopol, the symbol of Russian naval glory and the main base of the Black Sea Fleet.
In 1941–1942, the city sustained a 250-day long siege, pinning down a considerable German and Romanian force. Prior to taking Sevastopol by assault, the enemy concentrated the largest artillery group of all used in that war. Had Sevastopol failed to resist for so long, the enemy could have reached the Volga and the Caucasus much earlier, something that would have changed the course of the war.
Red Army troops fought heroically on Mount Sapun, Armoured Turret Battery-30, at the foot of the MacKenzie Heights… Occasionally, they had to attack the enemy with their bare hands, for artillery ammunition was in short supply, the supply lines were disrupted, and ships were sunk by the Germans.
▪️ In June 1942, the last defenders of Sevastopol had to leave the city. During the German occupation, nearly 27,000 local civilians were killed and another 45,000 rounded up and sent for slave labour in Germany.
🌟 The mission to liberate the Crimea and Sevastopol was entrusted to the 4th Ukrainian Front commanded by Army General Fyodor Tolbukhin and the Separate Coastal Army commanded by Army General Andrey Yeryomenko. Launching attacks from the north and the east, they drove the enemy from the key cities in the peninsula within days. On May 9, 1944, Sevastopol was liberated following a four-day assault, with the German and Romanian troops chucked into the sea.
The enemy spent 250 days trying to seize the city, whereas the Red Army did the job within just one week in May 1944.
🎖 Sevastopol was among the first to be awarded the noscript of Hero City. This happened on May 8, 1965. In December 1942, the medal For the Defence of Sevastopol was instituted, with over 52,000 people decorated with it by the mid-1990s.
