Granddaughter of Benito Mussolini tops poll in Rome city council election

”Brothers of
#Italy " party candidate Rachele #Mussolini wins most votes in #Rome city council election

The granddaughter of Benito Mussolini worn the highest number of votes in elections for Rome’s city council as support for Brothers of Italy, the far-right party to which she belongs, edged up in northern cities held by the left.

Rachele Mussolini secured more than 8,200 votes in the municipal elections on Sunday and Monday, an increase on the 657 received when she entered the council on her first mandate in 2016.

Azerbaijan and Iran

Why is There Now a Crisis in Relations Between #Azerbaijan and #Iran

Recent weeks have seen a significant military escalation on the border between Azerbaijan and Iran. With belligerent statements made by both sides, Iranian troops are being transferred to the border with their northern neighbor. Explaining the move, Brigadier-General Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the Ground Forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), said: “We will not tolerate the presence of Israel in our back yard.”

Azerbaijan’s relations with Israel are indeed a constant irritation and tension to Iran, which is, in effect, in a state of undeclared war with Israel. Iran is frankly afraid that Israel will establish an outpost on its northern border, which will serve as a base for intelligence and special operations such as the drone attack in which Iranian General Qasem Soleimani was assassinated on January 3, 2020. With that attack in mind, Tehran has been particularly closely monitoring Azerbaijani troops’ use of Israeli-made drones, missiles, anti-tank missile systems and other weapons during last year’s war in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“The relations between Azerbaijan and Israel are much deeper that they appear, like an iceberg, most of which is hidden from prying eyes.” These words of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev were contained in a telegram sent from the US Embassy in Baku to Washington, and became widely known following their publication by Wikileaks. The high level links between Azerbaijan and Israel – the two countries have exchanged visits by senior officials – are based on geopolitical and economic factors

Putin Talks About Energy

For anyone wondering why energy
prices have risen so sharply over the last few weeks
Russian President Vladimir #Putin provided a reasonable explanation when he addressed the #energy issue in a video conference.

His comments provide an interesting (and IMHO: more plausible) alternative to the usual Media accusations of manipulation by #Russia of energy markets :

"Now, the world economy is recovering well after the past year’s crisis. The demand for energy is growing and, hence, prices are soaring.

"As you know, the global energy market does not tolerate hectic moves and vagaries. Investment plans in this area are long-term. Therefore, any abrupt and rash actions may lead, and, judging by the current market situation, are already leading to serious imbalances like those we are seeing in the European market that has been affected this year by several unfavourable factors all at once.

"First, the rapid post-crisis recovery of the economy has 'heated up' the energy demand.

"Second, gas reserves in many European countries’ underground storage facilities dwindled as a result of the harsh winter in early 2021. I am referring precisely to their underground gas storage facilities, the underground storage facilities of our European partners.

"Third, the production of wind energy declined noticeably later in the summer because of hot and windless weather. It should also be taken into consideration that the energy balance has changed dramatically in Europe over the past ten years.

Many countries in the region have given up their coal-burning and nuclear power plants in favour of wind power generation that is heavily dependent on weather conditions.

"And, finally, fourth, the practices of our European partners [are to blame].

These practices have reaffirmed that, properly speaking, they have made mistakes. We were talking with the former European Commission; all of its activities were aimed at curtailing the so-called long-term contracts and at transitioning to gas exchange trading.

"It turned out – and today this is absolutely obvious – that this policy is erroneous, erroneous for the reason that it fails to take into account the gas market specifics dependent on a large number of uncertainty factors.

Consumers, including, for example, fertiliser producers, are losing all price benchmarks. All of this is leading to failures and, as I said, imbalances.

"As a result, the gas price has broken all historical records. Today it is approaching $2,000 per thousand cubic metres of gas, which is over ten times last year’s average price.

The War on Cash

Programmable #Digital #Currency”: The next stage of the new normal? The war on cash’s endgame is here: money replaced by vouchers subject to complete state control.

Building on the #bitcoin model, central banks are planning to produce their own “digital currencies”. Removing any and all remaining #privacy, granting total control over every transaction, even limiting what ordinary people are allowed to spend their money on.

From the moment bitcoin and other #cryptocurrencies first emerged, sold as an independent and alternative medium of exchange outside the financial status quo, it was only a matter of time before the new alternative would be absorbed, modified and redeployed in service of the state.

Enter “Central Bank Digital Currencies”: the mainstream answer to bitcoin.

For those who have never heard of them, “Central Bank Digital Currencies” ( #CBDC ) are exactly what they sound like, digitized versions of the pound/dollar/euro etc. issued by central banks.

Like bitcoin (and other crypto), the CBDC would be entirely digital, thus furthering the ongoing war on cash. However, unlike crypto, it would not have any encryption preserving anonymity. In fact, it would be totally the reverse, potentially ending the very idea of financial privacy.

German elections:

SPD, Greens & FDP in talks to form next Govt

The Greens, who are seen as closer ideologically to Mr Scholz's SPD, were first out of the blocks on Wednesday, saying that a centre-left-led coalition made most sense.

Co-leader Annalena Baerbock told reporters that Germany needed "a new beginning" and could ill afford a long period of political stalemate.

The Greens said significant differences had to be addressed but they had found common ground with the pro-business liberals.

Later in the morning the head of the FDP, Christian Lindner, announced the party had accepted a proposal for three-way talks with the Greens and the SPD to "explore common ground that will move our country forward".

Syniverse hasn't revealed whether text messages were exposed.

#Syniverse, a company that routes hundreds of billions of text messages every year for hundreds of carriers including #Verizon, #TMobile, and #AT&T, revealed to government regulators that a hacker gained unauthorized access to its databases for five years.

Syniverse and carriers have not said whether the hacker had access to customers' text messages.

A filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission last week said that:

"in May 2021, Syniverse became aware of unauthorized access to its operational and information technology systems by an unknown individual or organization.

Promptly upon Syniverse's detection of the unauthorized access, Syniverse launched an internal investigation, notified law enforcement, commenced remedial actions and engaged the services of specialized legal counsel and other incident response professionals

Water as Weapon of War:

Activists Say #Israel is Drying Out the West Bank to Drive Out #Palestinians

The history of #water #apartheid

When Israel occupied the West Bank and #Gaza after the 1967 war, it took control of the areas’ water resources. The state established pumping quotas and banned construction of new wells in the occupied territories.

Mekorot, Israel’s national water company, was put in charge of the Occupied Palestinian Territories’ (oPT) water in 1982. By 1986, pumping quotas were reduced by 10 percent for Palestinian wells — fostering greater water insecurity.

The 1995 Oslo II Accord was portrayed as a turning point for water independence in Palestine. The Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) and Israeli-Palestinian Joint Water Committee were created but Israel retained control of the flow and volume of water given to the oPT.

Despite the name, the PWC doesn’t oversee water resources. Instead its role is to distribute the limited water supply Israel provides.

The agreement was supposed to last only five years but remains in effect today. Under the initiative, 80 percent of the West Bank’s water is for Israeli use and 20 percent is for Palestinian use. Israelis also enjoy an unlimited supply of water while Palestinians have their supply restricted.

What was billed as a cooperative venture between Palestine and Israel is merely the occupation of water in disguise.

“There are no official meetings between the Palestinans and the Israelis because the Israelis don’t consider us as a counterpart,” Dr. Abdelrahman Al Tamimi, PHG’s director, said.

The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) nonetheless told MintPress that the Palestinian Authority is responsible for providing water to the West Bank and touted collaboration between Palestine and Israel.

“Master programs are being promoted in the area of Judea and Samaria [West Bank], which will address the water supply until the years 2040-2050, to all populations in the area. We will note that these programs are being coordinated with the Palestinian Water Authority and [have] even been shifted in light of its requests,” a COGAT spokesperson said.

Russia Europe Energy "Crisis"

Russian Gas Rescues Europe’s Energy Crisis

This week as Europe’s #energy crisis broke new records in terms of soaring consumer prices, President #Putin stepped in with a promise to increase exports of natural #gas.

The news had an immediate calming effect on Europe’s energy markets which saw prices whipsawing to lower levels. Rather than simply greeting the development as a positive move, there were predictably sinister comments from some quarters. #Russia was accused in Western media of “holding Europe hostage” over the continent’s energy crisis and using its vast supply of natural gas as a “geopolitical weapon.” Jake Sullivan, the US national security advisor to President Biden, told the BBC that Moscow was “exploiting” Europe’s energy crunch.

This is an overwrought, convoluted way of interpreting what is normal economic interplay of supply and demand. But the irrationality betrays an obdurate mindset of Russophobia that is untenable. If politicians and experts are so possessed of such foolish bigotry then their assessments on the subject and much else besides are hopelessly unreliable.

Europe’s current energy crisis and market turmoil have nothing to do with Russia as a primary factor. The pent-up demand after a year of economic quiescence due to the coronavirus pandemic, the low storage of natural gas by European countries due to government policies, the switch to renewable energy sources not being able to meet demand, and the approach of winter, have all compounded the overall supply of gas.

This has, in turn, caused benchmark prices for the fuel and other forms of energy to skyrocket. Gas prices are up more than five-fold.

What has that got to do with Russia? Nothing, at least in causality.

Russia is historically Europe’s biggest supplier of natural gas. It accounts for about 40% of the continent’s consumption.

As President Putin pointed out this week, Russia’s state-owned Gazprom has met all its contractual deliveries of natural gas to Europe.

The allegation from some quarters that Russia is withholding gas supplies to Europe in order to exert political pressure on Europe is a baseless lie that stems from anti-Russia prejudice and propaganda.

The fact is Europe is faced with an energy crisis partly of its own making, and Russia is able to alleviate it by increasing its already substantial supply of natural gas.

Fire hits Gazprom's Amur gas facility

Fire hits major #Gazprom #gas processing facility under construction near the Sila Sibiri trunkline that supplies gas to #China

No casualties, but gas plant damage.

-------

A major fire stopped commissioning of a second gas processing train at the Gazprom-operated #Amur gas processing plant in East #Siberia, #Russia in the early hours of Friday.

There were no casualties reported but newbuild facilities were damaged.

According to eyewitness reports, the accident started with a natural gas leak near a de-ethanisation column, with escaping gas igniting several minutes later.

The Amur plant is a key element in Gazprom’s plan to expand its gas deliveries to China via the Sila Sibiri pipeline, with its facilities designed to remove high-value components from the outgoing methane mixture, such as ethane, propane, butane and helium.

According to Gazprom, gas intake to the plant has been halted until the the accident investigation and damage assessment have been concluded.

In the short-term, the accident is not expected to affect the flow of Russian gas to China via Sila Sibiri because Gazprom is able to deliver volumes from the Chayanda field in East Siberia without treatment at the plant.

The Amur plant, which saw its first train formally commissioned in June this year, is set to host six trains and will be able to process 42 billion cubic metres per annum of untreated gas.

Gazprom had earlier estimated that the plant will require total investment of over $11 billion to bring it to its full capacity by 2025.

Davos WEF Plandemic

How is the Davos World Economic Forum involved in the coronavirus pandemic?

The Davos World Economic Forum ( #WEF ) is a premier forum for governments, global corporations and international entrepreneurs.

Founded in 1971 by engineer and economist #Klaus #Schwab, the WEF describes its mission as “shaping global, regional and industry agendas” and “improving the state of the world.”

According to its website, “moral and intellectual integrity is at the heart of everything it does.” The WEF has been involved in the coronavirus pandemic in several ways.

First, the WEF was, together with the #Gates #Foundation, a sponsor of the prescient #Event201 coronavirus pandemic simulation exercise, held in NYC on Oct 18 2019, the same day as the opening of the #Wuhan Military World Games, seen by some as “ground zero” of the global pandemic.

China itself has argued that US military athletes may have brought the virus to Wuhan.

Second, the WEF has been a leading proponent of #digital #biometric #identity systems, arguing that they will make societies and industries more efficient, more productive and more secure. In Jul 2019, the WEF started a project to “shape the future of travel with biometric-enabled digital traveler identity management.” In addition, the WEF collaborates ;with the #ID2020 alliance, which is funded by the Gates and Rockefeller foundations and runs a program to “provide digital ID with vaccines”. In particular, ID2020 sees the vaccination of children as “an entry point for digital identity.”

Third, WEF founder Klaus Schwab is the author of the book COVID-19: The Great Reset, published in Jul 2020, which argues that the coronavirus pandemic can and should be used for an “economic, societal, geopolitical, environmental and technological reset,” including in particular, advancing global governance, accelerating digital transformation, and tackling climate change.

Finally, the WEF has been running, since 1993, a program called “Global Leaders for Tomorrow,” rebranded, in 2004, as “Young Global Leaders”. This program aims at identifying, selecting and promoting future global leaders in both business and politics. Indeed, quite a few “Young Global Leaders” have later managed to become Presidents, Prime Ministers, or CEOs (see below).

What is the cause of the "gender pay gap"?

A new study has looked at the difference in salary between men and women.

It's suggested it's down to what women study at university.

------

"They cited previous IFS studies which show that taking a degree in economics at university boosts women’s pay by 75 per cent by age 30. This is more than ten times the return to studying creative arts (7.2 per cent).

Women make up nearly two-thirds of creative arts graduates and less than a third of economics graduates, meaning they are over-represented in the subjects with low financial returns.

Xiaowei Xu, a senior research economist at IFS and an author of the research, said:

Women disproportionately choose to study subjects that yield low financial returns. Of course, money isn’t – and shouldn’t be – the only factor when it comes to choosing what to study.

“But more needs to be done to inform young people about the financial consequences of degree choices, and to overcome gender stereotypes, so that women are not locked out of high-paying careers by choices at a young age.”
