Today the German state celebrates "German Unity Day", marking the 32nd anniversary of the Federal Republic of Germany's takeover of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).
For many former GDR citizens the capitalist takeover of the former people-owned businesses that most of them had been employed by spelled economic catastrophe. Their former state became a neoliberal laboratory for west German capitalists at the expense of the east german people, whose right to work abruptly ceased to exist.
After three decades of German reunification, the economic gap between east and west continues to divide the country. The average home in west Germany is twice as wealthy as in the east.
