I love history.

I was thinking today about the attack on Pearl Harbor on Sunday, December 7, 1941.

When I was in high school (a few years ago!), I elected to write my Civics Class term paper on the question of whether President Franklin D. Roosevelt knew in advance that Japan would launch a “surprise” attack against the United States.

I concluded that while I could not prove definitively that Roosevelt knew the attack would be on Pearl Harbor, he did know an attack would occur. So the attack was a “surprise” to the country, but not to the President.

My high school research revealed to me that Roosevelt allowed the attack to occur in order to unify the country against a common foe. Assuming my conclusion to be correct, Roosevelt’s strategy worked as our nation quickly united and ultimately defeated Germany and Japan.

Can you even imagine the level of difficulty a President of the United States and Commander-in-Chief faces in today’s world having to always be prepared for a military attack against our country and our freedom?

The key to victory if an attack occurs on our country will ALWAYS be to have our country united to the fullest extent possible.

Recognizing that the United States is an extremely diverse country where freedom allows a variety of choices and lifestyles to co-exist, I suspect that a President might have to make decisions some may view as unpopular and some which might even go against the views of his base of support.

The decisions in a time of war must be weighed against the necessity for unity.

I think we have a pretty good idea on how difficult it is on one individual to be President and the Commander in Chief.

I think we ALL know that UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL.

Just sayin.’
