ISO 20022 is now imminent, with a go-live in just ten days. Are you ready for this essential transformational change?
After the delayed November 2022 launch date for ISO 20022, the new date of this new standard in financial messages is looming. March 20, 2023, is the new go-live date for ISO 20022.
There has been much noise in the banking sector about ISO 20022. However, the question remains, is the industry ready for this redefinition of messaging in the payments ecosystem? An investigation paper from Celent has found that 63% of large banks believe they will be prepared by November 2025. However, 25% say they will need help to meet the deadline or rely on available stop-gap measures. Even more worrying, only 3% of corporates expect banks to be 100% ready.

The co-existence period
The coexistence period from March 2023 through November 2025 will allow banks time to adopt the ISO 20022 standard. However, early adopters will have a competitive edge, as the bank and its customers will benefit from the improved, more structured data afforded by ISO 20022.
Once the period of coexistence starts, aka, from go-live, the framework will support the exchange of ISO 20022 messages for CBPR+ (Cross-border Payments and Reporting Plus) while continuing support for non-ISO 20022 messages. However, go-live means an organization must be ready to handle ISO 20022 formatted data, as any participant can send ISO 20022 messages, and payments are, after all, two-way. As a result, all affected organizations must be ready to receive ISO 20022 formatted messages and process the translated MT embedded within the message. SWIFT’s In-flow Translation will be essential for many banks moving over to full ISO20022 support

China, Russia deploying space weapons to attack U.S. satellites, warns Space Force chief

China’s military has deployed 347 satellites, including 35 launched in the past six months, to target U.S. forces in a future conflict, the commander of the Space Force told a Senate hearing on Tuesday.
Space Force Gen. B. Chance Saltzman said Russia is also testing and deploying orbital anti-satellite weapons, extensive cyber capabilities and land-based anti-satellite missiles, electronic jammers and lasers.
China’s more advanced space warfare weapons pose “the most immediate threat” to attacks in space, while less-capable Russian space assets also pose “an acute threat” of attacks or disruptions on U.S. satellites.
Both “are intent on targeting perceived U.S. vulnerabilities and eliminating American advantage in the space domain,” the four-star general told a Senate Armed Services subcommittee on strategic forces hearing Tuesday. “Both expect space to be key to future warfare by enabling long-range precision strikes. Both seek information superiority through disabling an adversary’s space communication and navigation systems.”
Gen. Saltzman said China has been aggressively building space weapons and technology to attack space systems and ground components. Beijing is aiming to become the world’s leading space power by 2045 as part of what Chinese officials have called a “space dream,” deploying lasers that can attack satellite sensors and electronic warfare jammers that can disable GPS satellites and communications satellites.

China, Russia, Iran Hold Joint Military Drills in Gulf of Oman

BEIJING — Naval forces from China, Iran and Russia — all countries at varying degrees of odds with the United States — are staging joint drills in the Gulf of Oman this week, China’s Defense Ministry has announced.
Other countries are also taking part in the “Security Bond-2023” exercises, the ministry said Tuesday without giving details. Iran, Pakistan, Oman and the United Arab Emirates all have coastlines along the waterbody lying at the mouth of the strategic Persian Gulf.

“This exercise will help deepen practical cooperation between the participating countries’ navies… and inject positive energy into regional peace and stability,” the ministry statement said.
The exercises scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday come amid heightened tensions between the US and China over a range of issues, including China’s refusal to criticize Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine and continuing support for the Russian economy.
The US and its allies have condemned the invasion, imposed punishing economic sanctions on Russia and supplied Ukraine with defensive arms. Iran and the US have been adversaries since the founding of the Islamic Republic in 1979 and the taking of US diplomats as hostages.
