BALTIMORE — An explosion ripped a wall from the Back River Waste Water Treatment Plant

Armacost said there was 12,000 gallons of thermal oil, a high-temperature oil that Synagro uses in its process, and that the remainder was allowed to burn off. The Maryland Department of the Environment responded to the scene and confirmed that the oil was contained to the site. No hazardous materials were involved and there is no environmental impact, Armacost said.

The treatment plant continued to operate and treat waste water as usual.
