Organ-Trafficking Nigerian Politician Found Guilty Under UK’s Modern Slavery Act

A man was transported to Britain to be exploited for his kidney by former deputy president of the Nigerian senate Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice, daughter Sonia, and Dr Obinna Obeta, an Old Bailey jury found.

The group falsely presented the unnamed man as a cousin so that medics would carry out an £80,000 transplant after the victim was offered an illegal payment to donate his organ to the senator’s daughter who suffered from kidney disease.

The Ekweremadus and Obeta treated the man as “disposable assets – spare parts for reward,” prosecutor Hugh Davies KC told the court, entering into “an emotionally cold commercial transaction” with him and other potential donors.
