In the U.S. state of Arizona, within the city limits of Tucson, lies the world’s largest aircraft graveyard. According to unofficial estimates, it holds nearly 4,500 aircraft, including 40 spacecraft. The total value of this hardware exceeds $35 billion.

Arizona was chosen for a reason: the dry climate allows preserved aircraft to remain intact for decades, and the flat, solid ground makes it possible to store new arrivals with almost no site preparation.

Some of the aircraft stored here can be restored and potentially return to service. Others are used as donors for spare parts or sold to U.S.-friendly countries. The site is heavily guarded, and only hopelessly outdated or completely destroyed airframes are scrapped.

Every year, Tucson’s aircraft fleet grows by about 400 units, and roughly the same number is sold. As a result, the airbase operates as a major commercial enterprise, reportedly generating $11 for every $1 invested.
