In the case of Robinhood, they share the trading information with hedge funds like Citadel, so they can profit off positions traders are taking. For example, say a large order is long some stock. Citadel will purchase shares before executing that order, getting a better price and riding up the gains. It’s a sort of arbitrage. It might just be small total change in the price they are cashing in but imagine getting a few cents off millions and millions of trades. They got caught a few years back and had to pay a fine.
