欧洲核子研究中心27日宣布,科研人员观测到了反氢原子在重力作用下自由下落。
团队将反氢原子“囚禁”在一个名为阿尔法-g的垂直真空磁阱中,并通过逐渐降低磁阱顶部和底部的电流调节磁场,让这些反氢原子在20秒内逃逸。计算机模拟结果显示,对于物质来说,这种操作将导致大约20%的原子通过磁阱顶部逃逸,80%的原子通过底部逃逸,这是由重力引起的差异。研究团队综合了7次释放反氢原子试验的结果后发现,反氢原子从磁阱顶部和底部逃逸的比例与计算机模拟结果一致。这表明在当前试验精度范围内,反氢原子在引力作用下表现出向下坠落的运动趋势,其重力加速度也和普通物质一致。
这是人类首次直接观测到反物质在地球引力作用下与普通物质拥有同样的表现,是反物质研究的“里程碑”式发现,也再次印证了爱因斯坦在广义相对论中的预测。
