The famine during the caliphate of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) produced a generation that overthrew both the Roman and Persian empires and the prosperity that prevailed in Andalusia and Baghdad led to the destruction of all Islamic countries.

ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ فَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ لَكُنتُم مِّنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ (٦٤)
Yet you turned away afterwards. Had it not been for Allah’s grace and mercy upon you, you would have certainly been of the losers.

وَعَسَى أَنْ تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ وَعَسَى أَنْ تُحِبُّوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ شَرٌّ لَكُمْ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ 
But you may hate a thing although it is good for you, and may love a thing although it is evil for you. Allah knows, and you do not. (216)

- Zakat is a means of seeking the pleasure of Allah, while taxes may serve the interests of the capitalist class.

- Zakat aims to uplift the poor, while taxes can contribute to the enrichment of the wealthy.

- Zakat is given voluntarily by believers to practice their belief, while taxes are enforced through coercion.

- Zakat is believed to bring blessings and not diminish one's wealth, whereas taxes can be seen as a burden on property.

- The rate of Zakat remains constant over time, while taxes tend to increase with economic growth.

- Zakat is considered an act of mercy, while taxes can be viewed as oppressive and unjust.
