It seems to me that a significant proportion of the discourse on masculinity is cognitive dissonance.

It is a bit like people like Haqiqatjou or someone like Tate, in their view of Islam...they basically embrace the stereotypes promoted by people who hate Islam and Muslims. And the discourse on masculinity sort of does this with the stereotypes about men. Like, "yeah, we are brutes, dominant, aggressive, with shallow motivations, driven by money and sex, so what?"
And this is radically contradictory to reality.
You cannot have read any amount of literature, been exposed to art, or (sorry) listened to much variety of music in your life, seen sublime works of architecture, read any poetry, or, frankly, lived very much at all, and think that men are in any degree whatsoever less sensitive, less nuanced in their emotions and understanding of emotions, less moved by the human condition, less feeling, less compassionate, or less appreciative of beauty or love or tenderness, than women

Here and there I have seen comments by Muslims in the West (mostly) expressing happiness about the selection of Anwar Ibrahim as the new prime minister of Malaysia. To them, I assume, he is something of an icon: a righteous Muslim political leader who suffered persecution and wrongful imprisonment for over a decade due to the diabolical scheming of secularist politicians who did not want to see Malaysia becoming more Islamic. This was more or less the narrative 20 years ago, and most Muslims in the West don’t know any better. Anwar is a Mandela-esque figure in their imagination.

It might surprise them to know that religious, conservative Muslims in Malaysia, overwhelmingly, do not support Anwar Ibrahim. They did not vote for him. They do not want him. His political party is not the Islamic party in Malaysia; it sits at the opposite end of that spectrum. Malaysian Muslims reject Anwar not simply because of his sodomy case (which was never disproven, and which has been followed by other sodomy accusations), but because he is openly pro-Western, pro-IMF, has a long-standing connection with the National Endowment for Democracy in the US, which is recognized as a CIA operation for advancing American economic interests abroad, and because he is fundamentally aligned with Western and global elites and the likes of the World Economic Forum. Anwar Ibrahim is a liberal, and devout Muslims expect him to move Malaysia down the liberal path, including the normalization of LGBT. This may or may not be the way Anwar ultimately governs, but that is the perception and expectation of religious Muslims in the country.

Anwar Ibrahim is the prime minister that the US has always wanted in Malaysia, and this, frankly, is precisely why so many Western Muslims have an inaccurate view of him – because they are fed the propaganda churned out about him by non-Muslims and non-Malaysians which casts him as an entirely different entity than he actually is.

Nevertheless, he is now prime minister, and we pray for Allah to Guide him for at least as long as he successfully retains that position.
