This graphic suggests who the real primary targets are for the sanctions against Russia and the war in Ukraine. It would not be inaccurate to conclude that the word "Russia" in most mainstream and government rhetoric is actually just a euphemism for "German manufacturing"; as in, "we must defeat Russia, we must destroy Russia's economy"

Germany, and Europe generally, barely survived the winter this year by slashing industrial manufacturing, and because of historic lows in the price of LNG largely attributed to China's Covid shutdown, as well as unexpectedly mild weather conditions. None of these factors can be relied upon next year. I don't know, frankly, how they will be able to replenish their reserves over the summer, unless Olaf Scholtz marries the daughter of an emir and Ursula van der Leyden becomes the 4th or 5th wife of an Emirati shaykh.

Polls indicate that nearly 40% of Austrians oppose sanctions against Russia, and there have been significant protests across Germany over the country's involvement in the war

Protesters in France storm the headquarters of luxury goods holding company LVMH, whose CEO was recently ranked the richest man in the world, and which recently both shut down outlets in Russia and announced that Russians will no longer be able to purchase their products anywhere in the world except through a third party of another nationality.
It should be noted that the bulk of LVMH's sales revenues are generated outside of Europe, and the fastest growth market for their luxury items is in China, and more broadly in Asia.

a Saudi airline was reportedly struck by artillery — apparently by accident — amidst the ongoing battle between the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group and the Sudanese military. How Saudi Arabia reacts to this will reveal a good deal about what is actually happening.

RSF has claimed control over army headquarters and state television, and the UAE and KSA have issued a statement calling for a return to the transition process. It looks rather like the RSF is operating under the direction of the Khaleej, just as they were in Yemen. Allahu 'Alam

China calls for a cease-fire in Sudan and avoiding further escalation

I would interpret this as a call specifically to the government of Sudan and the army, not so much to the RSF.

🇸🇩🇸🇦 Saudi Foreign Minister calls leaders from warring parties in Sudan.

Saudi Minister calls for stopping military escalation and return to agreements outlining transition to civilian-led government.

👉Violence erupted in Sudan on Saturday, first time since 2019 when Sudanese Prez Omar al-Bashir was ousted by Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and army, but serious clashes happened after RSF objected to be integrated into military as part of agreements reached to achieve civilian-led government.

🇸🇦🤝🇵🇸📰 WSJ: Saudi Officials, Hamas Leaders Set to Meet in Jeddah to Discuss Re-Establishing Ties

— "Senior Saudi officials were planning to meet with leaders of the Palestinian militant and political group Hamas on Sunday to discuss renewing diplomatic ties which have been cool since 2007, part of a diplomacy spree led by Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman that has seen Riyadh move closer to Iran.

Re-establishing ties between Iran-backed Hamas, which is a U.S. designated terrorist group, and the Saudi kingdom would mark a setback for efforts by the U.S. and Israel to establish a military alliance between Israel and other Sunni-majority countries against Iran and its allies.

They also complicate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s goal of normalizing relations with Riyadh, with opposition to Iran as their primary shared interest.

Hamas was invited to the kingdom by Saudi leaders, Hamas officials said. Senior officials are expected to land in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, late Sunday, the officials said. "
