💢U.S. Air Forces Central released a video of Wednesday’s encounter showing a Russian SU-35 fighter closing in on a Reaper and later a number of the so-called parachute flares moving into the drone’s flight path. The flares are attached to parachute. Lt. Gen. Alex Grynkewich, commander of 9th Air Force in the Middle East, said three of the U.S. drones were operating over northwest Syria after 10:30 a.m. local time, on a mission against the Islamic State group which was not detailed, when three of the Russian aircraft “began harassing the drones.” The drones were not armed with weapons and are commonly used for reconnaissance missions
💢British defense ministry: On 1 July 2023, the Russian Navy established a new Azov Naval District, headquartered in the occupied Ukrainian port city of Mariupol. Subordinate to the Black Sea Fleet (BSF), the district will reportedly command eight warships including three modern, Karakurt class corvettes which can launch SS-N-30A Kalibr cruise missiles. The Azov Sea is a vital maritime area for Russia because it links its inland waterways to international maritime routes. In the context of the war, it also offers an alternative military resupply option should Russia's over-land routes to southern Ukraine be disrupted. The Azov Naval District will likely focus on supporting logistical and counter-partisan tasks, freeing up the main BSF to concentrate on long range strike operations and projecting maritime power further abroad.
💢ISW: Russian forces continue to target Ukrainian positions near the Antonivskybridge in Kherson Oblast on July 6. A Russian Combat Reserve affiliated source claimed that Russian aviation conducted strikes on Ukrainian areas near the bridge on the west bank of the Dnipro River. Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations in western Zaporizhia oblast on July. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Ukrainian forces conducted offensives in the Melitopol direction and consolidated control of new positions. A Kremlin-affiliated milblogger claimed that Russia's defense industrial base producers have made efforts to speed up military equipment production & that the employees of Uralvangonzavod switched to a three-shift schedule in the fall of 2022 to increase tank production. Russian officials continue efforts to create territorial defense units in Russia border oblasts. Belgorod oblast Governor Gladkov stated during a live broadcast on July 6 that the Belgorod Oblast Territorial Defense will form a 2nd regiment with 3000 personnel. ISW said Russian forces likely lack combat-ready reserves. The failure to conduct any rotations will likely result in a quicker rate of degradation for Russian formations defending against Ukrainian counteroffensives in southern Ukraine. The Ukrainian General Staff stated that Russian forces set up a military base of over 800 personnel at the Vesna children’s sanatorium in Novopetrivka in occupied Zaporizhia Oblast and converted a recreation center into a military base in Chumakivka in occupied Kherson Oblast. The Ukraine General Staff reported that Russian forces continue to use children’s institutions to accommodate Russian troops and leverage civilians as human shields.

💢After a lull during June 2023, over the last seven days Bakhmut has again been the site of some of the most intense fighting along the front. Ukrainian forces have made steady gains to both the north and south of the Russian-held town. Russian defenders are highly likely struggling with poor morale, a mix of disparate units and a limited ability to find and strike Ukrainian artillery. The Russian leadership almost certainly see it as politically unacceptable to concede Bakhmut, which has a symbolic weight as one of the few Russian gains in the last 12 months. However, there are highly likely few additional reserves to commit to the sector.
💢Centcom: On July 7, U.S. Central Command conducted a strike in Syria that resulted in the death of Usamah al-Muhajir, an ISIS leader in eastern Syria. We have made it clear that we remain committed to the defeat of ISIS throughout the region, said Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, commander of U.S. Central Command. ISIS remains a threat, not only to the region but well beyond. There are no indications that any civilians were killed in this strike, and the coalition is assessing reports of a civilian injury. This will disrupt and degrade ISIS's ability to plan and conduct terror attacks. However, CENTCOM's operations against ISIS, alongside partner forces in Iraq and Syria, will continue in order to achieve the group's enduring defeat. The strike on Friday was conducted by the same MQ-9s that had, earlier in the day, been harassed by Russian aircraft in an encounter that had lasted almost two hours.
