💢British Ministry of Defence: On 21 December, President Putin was presented with plans to expand the Russian military by around 30% to 1.5 million personnel. It isn't clear when this level would be achieved. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shigou explained that the expansion would involve at least two brigades in north-western Russia growing to divisional strength. He cited the supposed threat from Finland and Sweden's accession to NATO. This constitutes one of the first insights into how Russia aspires to adapt its forces to the long-term strategic challenges resulting from its invasion of Ukraine. It remains unclear how Russia will find the recruits to complete such an expansion at a time when its forces are under unprecedented pressure in Ukraine.

💢On December 23, 2022, al-Qaeda released a 35-minute audio file, which the group claims is the words of former al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. After the death Osama bin Laden, founder and first leader of al-Qaeda, in May 2011, Ayman al-Zawahiri assumed the leadership this group and remained in this position until the summer 2022. However, the United States government officials announced in August 2022 that they had succeeded in killing Al-Zawahiri's residence in Kabul, Afghanistan, during drone attack by American military forces. After this operation, Taliban who currently rule Afghanistan, announced that they had not found the body of al-Zawahiri, and for this reason there are still rumors about the possibility that he is alive. After the claim of the American government regarding the killing al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda still has not announced its new leader. Some international observers believe that he is currently in Iran!
