How do You decide which modpack to play long-term?

People who actually play the game long-term (unlike me, who creates modpacks but never plays them), how do you choose which modpacks are worth your time and dedication?

I’m asking this partly because I’m interested, and also because it may help me create mods or modpacks that are more fun to play.

Gregtech chemical processes and their realism

how realistic is gregtech’s chemistry? obviously minecraft means it has to be simplified down a lot, but in comparison to actual chemistry, how deep does it go? does the realism just extent to highschool level chemistry?

if any chemists are here, what do you think about it? i don’t think it’s (or at least, i hope it isn’t) as hard as, well, actual chemistry, needing a masters for a minecraft mod sounds ridiculous, but still. just kind of curious.

Vanilla "unfriendly" mods?

After playing a little bit of Meatballcraft I really enjoyed how random and insane some of the stuff there was. In an era of mods trying to seamlessly fit into Minecraft's design philosophy, which weird and out-of-place mods you consider to be the most fun? Of course, tech mods don't count because mos of these are vanilla unfriendly by design in my opinion.
