JEI vs EMI — Which one is truly better for modern expert packs?
Hey folks,
I'm an old modded Minecraft player finally building my own expert modpack, and I’ve been having a blast crafting everything from recipes to progression systems. Naturally, I defaulted to JEI as my recipe viewer of choice, it’s what I’ve always known.
But recently, I started seeing more and more people mention EMI as a better alternative for modern packs. So now I’m pausing to ask the community:
What’s your actual preference — JEI or EMI? And why?
From what I’ve gathered:
* JEI has better compatibility with legacy mods and less explicit plugins.
* EMI offers better performance, a cleaner modern UI, and smarter recipe indexing.
* You can technically use both, but is that seen as good practice or just messy?
Personally, I prefer the oldschool interface ( probably just muscle memory ) but I’m open to being convinced. EMI does seem very appealing on paper.
The real issue for me is, I’ve already done a fair amount of JEI-specific setup in my pack (like custom pages, added tooltips, hidden duplicate entries, etc.), also Custom Machinary seems to work well with JEI with minor to no adjustments. So I’m wondering:
How painful is it to port all that to EMI?
Or is it even worth it from a production standpoint?
At the end of the day, I’m looking for the most stable and reliable tool for a long-term modpack, even if it means sacrificing some visual polish or modern UI features.
Would love to hear real-world experiences from other devs and players alike, what do you trust more in 1.20+?
Thanks in advance!
