New to Java edition

Hello!

My son just switched from a switch to a PC and I am doing my best to help him navigate this transition. His ultimate goal is to explore Alex’s caves. We logged into MC Java edition on the PC through the XBox application. Not sure if this was correct because he can’t figure out how to get to mods. I am not a video game person and I am trying my hardest to help him navigate. Can anyone help?
