Why is embers rekindled alchemy so difficult? (Reclamation modpack)

Hey guys, so I'm trying to figure this out. How can you understand Embers Rekindled? If an item stays on the alchemy pedestal, does that mean that it and the apparatus are correct? If they get eaten are they correct? The manual says that the glowing spots in the ash let you know what you got right but that number changed when I left two of the three items in the same spot with the same apparatus between two different experiments? How do I understand this? Thanks for the help!

basically i want to have a sort of gun in the server but a gun mod changes the game too much imo so i wondered if there’s something like a mod with a automatic/ faster crossbow or one that adds more quick charge enchants or something like that.
