Review Contained (NeoForge 1.21.1)

This pack was so good we actually played it till the end!

# Authors

Like other packs by BenBenLaw, it's a quest-driven mostly-tech pack with a lot of innovative ideas. This one was co-created with Ammoniumx, who brought us Forever Factory and Mechanical Mastery.

# Dev status: Beta but essentially finished

We played Beta version 8.1 of this pack, which was "done" enough to reach an end goal. As I write, the latest version is Beta 9.1 . I expect the first "full" release will happen soon. The pack is essentially playable from 8.1B onward.

We ran the pack (downloaded from CurseForge) on our home server. In about 2 weeks, it never crashed once, and we encountered no bugs. The dev and friends were responsive and friendly on Discord.

# Theme

It's kind of a sky/cave block insofar as you start out in a single closed room in space. There are only about 3 types of items but you build up by opening adjacent rooms and building more tech until you're finally able to exit to outer space, where you can explore and mine some asteroids. Fortunately you start the game wearing a space suit so you don't suffocate.

# Questbook

There's a good sequence of quests that build up on one another. Quests have meaningful hints where useful, and only there. We like it when important information is provided but not drowned in oceans of meaningless text. Nicely done! Some of those denoscriptions are quite necessary and you'll hate yourself if you ignore them.

# Mods

Throughout the pack, the main tech mod is Oritech, which will be new to some. JustDireThings appears in a strong supporting role. Again, quite a new mod with interesting interactions. All nicely automatable once you learn how. You'll want to explore the "machine core" concept and if you feel your machines are too slow you should look at the many available upgrades and addons.

This pack is not hardcore; lots of quality-of-life mods help make it an enjoyable experience. There's Storage Drawers and Ender Storage and a Tinker's-like smeltry. Integrated Dynamics, if you understand it, gives you fairly early item management with a crafting terminal and transport of items, fluids and even energy. One cable type is all you need! Otherwise you can later use Refined Storage or Applied Energistics. I also found Super Factory Manager tremendously helpful in managing resource production. If you're leery of SFM's quirky "programming" you could also go with XNet, which IMO is less versatile though. My wife is an equal opportunity hater of both and prefers to leverage her Applied Energistics expertise.

# Combat

A bit of combat is required in some dimensions, but the authors make it easy enough even for senior citizens like us. The Warden is easy if you pay attention to the enchanting quest hints. If you find the Deepslate, you can build some Wither-proof blocks. And the Chaos Guardian... is a no-show, mercifully.

# Automation

Most (all?) resources can (eventually) be produced infinitely. Most recipes are easy, but if you don't start to automate resource production early you'll struggle badly toward the end game. I vaguely recall needing many stacks of blocks of Gold and Diamond, plus lots more. You'll also want beefy power generation to run Oritech's Particle Accelerator in the end game.

# Verdict

This pack has lots of little technical challenges to be solved, but if you're a little experienced with modded Minecraft it won't give you any sleepless nights. We rate it "fun, interesting and enjoyable."
