Review Contained (NeoForge 1.21.1)

This pack was so good we actually played it till the end!

# Authors

Like other packs by BenBenLaw, it's a quest-driven mostly-tech pack with a lot of innovative ideas. This one was co-created with Ammoniumx, who brought us Forever Factory and Mechanical Mastery.

# Dev status: Beta but essentially finished

We played Beta version 8.1 of this pack, which was "done" enough to reach an end goal. As I write, the latest version is Beta 9.1 . I expect the first "full" release will happen soon. The pack is essentially playable from 8.1B onward.

We ran the pack (downloaded from CurseForge) on our home server. In about 2 weeks, it never crashed once, and we encountered no bugs. The dev and friends were responsive and friendly on Discord.

# Theme

It's kind of a sky/cave block insofar as you start out in a single closed room in space. There are only about 3 types of items but you build up by opening adjacent rooms and building more tech until you're finally able to exit to outer space, where you can explore and mine some asteroids. Fortunately you start the game wearing a space suit so you don't suffocate.

# Questbook

There's a good sequence of quests that build up on one another. Quests have meaningful hints where useful, and only there. We like it when important information is provided but not drowned in oceans of meaningless text. Nicely done! Some of those denoscriptions are quite necessary and you'll hate yourself if you ignore them.

# Mods

Throughout the pack, the main tech mod is Oritech, which will be new to some. JustDireThings appears in a strong supporting role. Again, quite a new mod with interesting interactions. All nicely automatable once you learn how. You'll want to explore the "machine core" concept and if you feel your machines are too slow you should look at the many available upgrades and addons.

This pack is not hardcore; lots of quality-of-life mods help make it an enjoyable experience. There's Storage Drawers and Ender Storage and a Tinker's-like smeltry. Integrated Dynamics, if you understand it, gives you fairly early item management with a crafting terminal and transport of items, fluids and even energy. One cable type is all you need! Otherwise you can later use Refined Storage or Applied Energistics. I also found Super Factory Manager tremendously helpful in managing resource production. If you're leery of SFM's quirky "programming" you could also go with XNet, which IMO is less versatile though. My wife is an equal opportunity hater of both and prefers to leverage her Applied Energistics expertise.

# Combat

A bit of combat is required in some dimensions, but the authors make it easy enough even for senior citizens like us. The Warden is easy if you pay attention to the enchanting quest hints. If you find the Deepslate, you can build some Wither-proof blocks. And the Chaos Guardian... is a no-show, mercifully.

# Automation

Most (all?) resources can (eventually) be produced infinitely. Most recipes are easy, but if you don't start to automate resource production early you'll struggle badly toward the end game. I vaguely recall needing many stacks of blocks of Gold and Diamond, plus lots more. You'll also want beefy power generation to run Oritech's Particle Accelerator in the end game.

# Verdict

This pack has lots of little technical challenges to be solved, but if you're a little experienced with modded Minecraft it won't give you any sleepless nights. We rate it "fun, interesting and enjoyable."

Why do people hate CreativeMode so much?

Just to preface, I started modding for 12 years and only recently returned to this sub after a long hiatus due to work obligations. I looked through some posts, and saw lots of people disparaging posts for being “low quality AI mods”. Is this really what the community has come to? I remember in 2015, the spirit of the sub was encouraging people who were just getting started modding to learn in their own ways. If it weren’t for that, I wouldn’t have taken the time to code and begin making my own mods on CurseForge (25k+ total downloads). Not saying these mods are anything groundbreaking, but I understand the spirit of showing it off in case someone else might find it useful or cool too. Tons of people understandably don't have the time or desire to code and still want unique experiences. In that case why would a "no-skill" website be so bad if it does what it advertises (even if not perfect) and helps them enjoy the game more? I haven't used the website myself, so I might be missing something here but I’m genuinely curious in hearing why it’s so looked down upon.

SR Parasites is honestly bad.

I really really want to enjoy this mod, its modeling and designs are super creative and cool, no other mod can compare in terms of that horror aspect in my opinion. But that's honestly all the good things I can give.

This mod is impossible to enjoy honestly, it's just a youtuber mod for dumb 100 day challenges. It's not fun when you get 2 tapped by a enderman in iron on your 2nd day, only the first 3 stages are SOMEWHAT fun in any area cause you get the body horror aesthetic without being one tapped by everything.

Why make a mod that is just for "Hey! I'm difficult!", literally the only modpack that incorporates it decently is RLCraft and that says something. Everything is genuinely bullshit in this modpack that is not fun, who thinks adaptation, wall hacks, block breaking, damage caps, instakills, op instakill status effects, etc etc is fun. There are many attempts for mods to balance this, hell one is literally a addon and you can't do anything against them still.

Spartan Weaponry gets overpowered instantly, guns? adaptation counter it + the fucking swarms, and fire the ONE thing meant to be able to counter them, they adapt to it!

I'm really disappointed that such great designs are just.. boring.. the mod itself is boring if it's the same exact way to play and the same ending, "oh you're not supposed to beat the last stage" then what's the point? There isn't any! That's just it, it's just boring in the end, it all ends in you dying and then stop playing, and honestly the argument that it needs other mods is kinda shit, especially NTM.

"The Flesh that Hates" is honestly what SR Parasites should be, sad their designs and horror aren't as great.

"Enlightend" has no config to turn off the end dimension's patreon message.

I've heard a lot about MCreator mods being notorious for not having reliable bug tracking / not having config files. But iirc, Enlightend has configs, just no config for this specific function.

Now trust me, I am ALL for mod creators getting the support they deserve. Modpacks are only possible because of mod developers. However, something seems a bit fishy and bad-faith about inserting an ad for your patreon into a core function of the game and NOT adding a config file to disable it... not to mention, it's hell for modpack developers, considering they are already supposed to be giving tons of credit to modders already.

I've also seen some interactions between the dev and a few community members regarding this small issue. The way the respond rubs me the wrong way about whether or not it'll be fixed in the future - or if they're even willing to.

If i'm wrong, and there is some secret Enlightend config for this somewhere, feel free to correct me. I've looked everywhere for it and cannot find it. The mod is high quality (imo) and has stunning textures, and this is the only thing stopping me from putting it in my modpack.
