what's with non-free mods?

i'm pretty new to modding Minecraft, and something has been very confusing to me: what's with the non-free mods? there's tons of mods that:

\- all rights reserved. meaning, you can't use their code for your own work or improve them, even if you give credit. this is in contrast to most other non-commercial software, which generally uses a permissive or copyleft license; see below. why? especially if the creator becomes inactive, it would be a shame for a popular mod (like simple voice chat) to fade into obscurity for nothing other than arbitrary legal requirements.

\- not source available. if a mod is free (as in free beer) to use, what's the point of not allowing people to fix bugs on their own? also, why not give back to the community?

\- obscure licenses. out of the mods that i have installed, many use non-SPDX licenses: 3d-Skin-Layers, Entity Culling, Lamb Dynamic Lights, Not Enough Animations, and Sodium. what's the point in adding random restrictions instead of choosing a tried-and-tested license?

edit: clarified q1

How hard from 1-10 would it be to beat The Chaos Guardian using only vanilla items? (1.21.1)

What can Hex Casting ACTUALLY do?

Been thinking about getting into this mod, and whenever I see it brought up online, people talk about how you can do anything you can dream of.

But then every showcase I’ve seen of it has “explosion spell” or “teleport but drop your items spell”, etc.

Especially considering it’s often paired with Ars Nouveau for the amethyst farming, I don’t see what you can do with Hex Casting that isn’t easier done in other mods.

Can I find a structure with it? Can I freeze all hostile mobs in a radius?

What sort of things can you do with Hex Casting that other mods like Ars Nouveau don’t already cover at half the inconvenience?

Modpack Release: Atomized

I just released a modpack called Atomized. It's a chemistry and tech focused skyblock modpack in 1.20.1 inspired by the original Chemical Exchange modpack from 1.12. Check it out if that seems interesting; any feedback is appreciated!
