Widgets can now directly be shown on the lock screen in One UI 6.1 on the Galaxy S24 series! No need to tap the clock to show certain widgets.

Some of the widgets look very similar to the ones on an iPhone, even.

You can no longer hide the gesture bar in One UI 6.1.

Left: Navigation bar settings in One UI 6.0 on a Z Fold 5

Right: Same settings page in One UI 6.1 on an S24

Some of y'all were asking how you'd do the Circle to Search gesture if the bar was hidden. The answer: you can't.

The Galaxy S24 series captures photos in Google's Ultra HDR format introduced in Android 14!
In addition to Ultra HDR capture support, the Samsung Galaxy S24 series supports SDR dimming on Android 14.

This is hard to show in an image, but I confirmed my Ultra supports it by checking that it returns true for the method Display#isHdrSdrRatioAvailable.

This means the phone reports an SDR/HDR ratio to apps (will need to check later what that ratio actually is).

SDR dimming lowers the pixel intensities of SDR layers only while keeping the display brightness high so that HDR content can maintain their brighter highlights.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 series seem to be the first non-Pixel Android phone to support dual eSIM! This means you can use two eSIM profiles at the same time, instead of only 1 pSIM + 1 eSIM or 2 pSIM for dual SIM functionality.

I haven't actually added two eSIM profiles yet, but my S24 Ultra model declares that it supports the MEP (Multiple Enabled Profiles) feature. MEP is the underlying feature that allows for the simultaneous use of two eSIM profiles stored on a single eSIM chip.

Update: Can now confirm that the Galaxy S24 series does indeed support dual eSIM! This means you can use two eSIM plans simultaneously, even though the phone only has a single eSIM chip. This is made possible thanks to the MEP feature.

Samsung Find is a new app preloaded on the Galaxy S24    series. This dedicated app provides a map view of your Galaxy devices on the SmartThings Find network. You can also track items you've attached your Galaxy SmartTag trackers to.

The Samsung Find app has 3 tabs: People, Devices, and Items. People tab lets you share your location with your friends and family. Devices tab helps you to find your or a family member's device. Items tab helps you find items tracked by a smart tag.

The "notify when left behind" feature, which notifies you when move away from important items, hasn't been added yet to the app. It'll be added in a future update but can currently be enabled from the existing SmartThings Find app.

This app will be preloaded on devices that launch with One UI 6.1, while devices that upgrade to One UI 6.1 can download this app from the Galaxy Store. The app is available globally (except for China).

By default, the updated AOD in One UI 6.1 on the Galaxy S24 series shows the lock screen wallpaper. If you want to return to showing a pure black background, go to Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display and toggle "Show Lock screen wallpaper".

Here's a before/after:

One UI 6.1 can overlay weather effects onto any photo, which you can then use as your lock screen wallpaper.

Just turn on "photo ambient wallpaper" under Settings > Advanced features > Labs. Then go to Settings > Wallpaper and style > Change wallpapers and under the Creative category select "photo ambient".

The effect that's overlaid changes based on the time and current weather conditions in your location.

One UI 6.1 adds a new "camera sharing" feature that lets you use your Galaxy S24 series as a webcam for your nearby Galaxy tablet! Both devices need to have WiFi, Bluetooth, and camera sharing turned on, so presumably this only works with Galaxy tablets running One UI 6.1 as well.

This is a separate feature from the thing Samsung announced at CES 2024: The ability to use your Galaxy S24 as a webcam for your Galaxy Book4 through Link to Windows.

One UI 6.1 adds a new "battery protection" feature to help protect the battery longevity of your Galaxy S24 series device. This can be found under Settings > Battery.

In One UI 6.0, you could only limit the charge to 85%, but with this new page, you can choose between a "basic" charging mode, "adaptive" charging mode, and limiting the charge to 80%.

The Galaxy S24 series can start a Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast! This lets you broadcast the media you're listening to to nearby devices that support Auracast. This is accessed by going to Settings > Bluetooth > three-dot menu > Broadcast sound using Auracast.

Other Galaxy devices that support BLE Audio might gain this capability when they upgrade to One UI 6.1.

AST SpaceMobile, a company that claims it's building the "first and only space-based cellular broadband network accessible directly by everyday smartphones", announced today that it's received a $155 million strategic investment from AT&T, Google, and Vodafone.

From the press release:

"Google and AST SpaceMobile agreed to collaborate on product development, testing and implementation plans for SpaceMobile network connectivity on Android and related devices." (emphasis mine)

For those of you who want to see satellite connectivity features on more Android phones, this is good news!

The January 2024 Google Play System Update is rolling out, and it brings a very minor new feature: a new button in settings that lets you reselect which photos/videos to grant an app permission to.

For context, Android 14 introduced a new "Selected Photos Access" feature which lets you grant apps partial access to your photos and videos. When an app tries to request access to your phone's entire media gallery, Android 14 inserts a button in the permission dialog that instead lets you use Android's Photo Picker to select which media items to grant the app access to.

Apps should ideally recognize when they've been granted partial access to media items and offer the user an option to select more items (Reddit and Google Messages both do this), but if they don't, you can now also go to Settings --> Security & Privacy --> Privacy --> Permission manager --> Photos and videos and tap the pencil icon next to "ask every time" to reselect items.
