The latest version of the Health Connect Jetpack library - v1.1.0-alpha09 - adds supports for the new background reads feature that Google announced at I/O. This lets apps read your Health Connect data while they're in the background.

Background reads works with the Health Connect controller that ships with Android 15 as well as Android 14 devices with SDK Extension 13 or higher. Not sure which versions of the Play Store client support this feature.

The library doesn't yet support the historical reads feature, though.

FYI: October 15 is the date I also heard when I originally reported on when the Pixel's Android 15 update would roll out.

Since it's an internal timeline, though, the exact date could've changed, so I kept it vague to be safe. I was already proven right about it being in October, so October 15 seems likely, but again, something last minute could happen, so it's TBD.

Anyways, a little delay never hurt anybody. A more stable update is a good tradeoff.

For context on why I'm sharing this, Android Headlines is now reporting that Android 15 will roll out to Google Pixels starting October 15. For reference, my original report from last month.

Xiaomi will be bringing its foldable MIX Flip to more markets later this month!

Honestly my biggest complaint with the unit I have is that it ships with the Chinese version of HyperOS and thus lacks Quick Share and Android Auto support.

By using Safe Coding, a "secure-by-design approach that prioritizes transitioning to memory-safe languages (like Rust) for new code," Google says that the share of vulnerabilities caused by memory safety issues have plummeted from 76% in 2019 to 24% in 2024.

(2024 isn't over, obviously, so Google is extrapolating that there'll be 36 disclosed memory safety vulnerabilities in Android by the end of the year.)

Google's blog post talks in great detail about their Safe Coding approach for new code and how it "quickly and counterintuitively reduces the overall security risk of a codebase, finally breaking through the stubbornly high plateau of memory safety vulnerabilities and starting an exponential decline, all while being scalable and cost-effective."

There are two important takeaways:

1) New code is overwhelmingly the most problematic, which is why they made a fundamental change in how they developed new code.

2) However, code matures and gets safer with time, exponentially, which makes the returns on investment for things like rewrites diminish over time as code gets older.

Memory safety vulnerabilities tend to be much more severe, more likely to be remotely reachable, more versatile, and more likely to be maliciously exploited than other vulnerability types, which is a big reason why Google is looking to mitigate them.
