Sh. Muhammad Ali Ādam's رحمه الله love for the Salah & the first row.

Being his neighbor for a number of years, I had the opportunity to pray in the same local masjid as him and on numerous occasions I witnessed many examples of his love for the Salah & the Sunnah.

The Shaykh had to be pushed on a wheelchair by his family members for every Salah. Despite that, the Shaykh would ALWAYS make the first row. Now, due to the narrowness of this masjid, there wasn't alot of space in the first row. Only about 10-15 (and that's being generous) could fit this space. Despite that, the Shaykh made it a point to pray in this coveted space. He would pray on the left hand side of the Imam due to the ease of access from the doorway.

I witnessed the same on Jumu'ah prayers. He would pray in the first row with his wheelchair on the left hand side of the imam towards the wall. And most of the time Sh. Yahya al-Mudarris حفظه الله would be right behind him in a wheelchair as well.

He was elderly, sick, & in a wheelchair, yet he would still find a way to pray in the first row. How many of us are young and healthy yet don't even pray in the masjid or pray in the 2nd+ rows of Salah? May Allah rectify our situation and make us better.

Sh. Muhammad Ali Ādam al-Ityūbi's love for knowledge and teaching رحمه الله.

A few years ago after the Shaykh recovered from his acoma, a classmate from Russia and I went to go visit him in the hospital. I believe it was the first day he felt well. He was expected to be discharged in a few days. When we arrived, only the Shaykh's sons and his best friend, an elder with his own son, were there on this occasion. After kissing the Shaykh's forehead and exchanging pleasantries, the Shaykh surprisingly said that class will be tonight إن شاء الله.

My classmate and I looked at each other out of shock. How could he deliver a class in such a state? The elder tried to talk him out of it and stated that his health was more important and it was better to rest. The Shaykh exclaimed "no, no what about the students? They are waiting for me."

Wallah, I could never get that moment out of my head. Some of us stop seeking knowledge if we're "not in the mood", or don't feel "motivated", or have a cold, or body aches, or insert any other reason...but this Muhaddith, may Allah illuminate his grave, was ready to deliver a lecture within hours of waking up from acoma. Also notice his selflessness and great concern he had for his students. Despite his condition, he was worried about his students. Subhanallah.

Alhamdulillah, the elder eventually convinced the Shaykh to rest.

*Silly moment* I didn't have much money at the time to buy a gift so I extended to the Shaykh the only thing on me at that moment which was a pocket-sized copy of Bulugh al-Maraam. The elder in the room said, "my son, get this beginner book out of here." The Shaykh smirked, lol...

رحمه الله...

From the signs of beneficial scholars is that you're always able to benefit from them.

By simply looking at the cover of Shaykh Muhammad's books رحمه الله we learn a tremendous etiquette: recognizing the status of one's parents/teachers and good treatment towards them even after their passing.

Before writing his father's name "Ali" (who was a scholar in his own right) he puts the noscript "ash-Shaykh, al-'Allāmah".

No matter how knowledgeable Sh. Muhammad became, he never forgot the virtue of his father/first teacher.

I've notice that when some mention the Shaykh, they write "Muhammad Adam", skipping his father's name. We should instead say Muhammad *Ali* Adam al-Etiūpi/al-Ityūbi and seek forgiveness for them all.

Additionally, we see the humility of the Shaykh as he refers to himself as خُوَيْدِم العلم meaning a small servant of knowledge. Allahu Akbar, despite being a mountain of knowledge he only refers to himself as being a "tiny servant".

Humility is from the outstanding traits of the people of knowledge.

He also says:

لجامعه الفقير إلى مولاه الغني القدير

Showing his reliance in Allah and that all of his efforts were not possible except with Allah's assistance.

May Allah grant us all beneficial knowledge coupled with humility. May He also have mercy on our Shaykh and grant him Firdous al-'Alā.

You would think being a teacher in both the Haram and a reputable educational institution in Makkah that in all of the places Sh. Muhammad Ali Adam al-Ityūbi رحمه الله could have lived, it would have been in a palace, mansion, or at the very least a nice building in a nice neighborhood, right?

Well, no. He lived here. With us. Literally across the street. When it rained, the streets were flooded. There are no gutters. Often times, the water supply of this whole strip was cut off due to a pipe or two that broke and flooded the streets. The chances of the electricity shutting off in the neighborhood on monthly basis were greater than students receiving their monthly stipend on time.

There was constant traffic and alot of people. But the Shaykh was not hidden away in some palace, no. He lived with the people and preferred it that way. When we talk about Zuhd (asceticism in that which is in your possession) & Wara' (abandoning the desire to obtain things not in your possession), we should know that he was really about that life, allahumma baarik. A wonderful example for Makkans...May Allah have mercy on him and grant him goodness for everything he taught us...
