Zf Film Grain on RAW files, PSA and you know what they say about assuming!
This may be a known thing, but I was about to pose this question as I did not see it this question posed anywhere. I found the answer myself though through my own testing and figured I’d share my findings here.
I’m loving the Nikon Film Grain options that were part of the 3.0 firmware. These paired with the RED creative picture controls from Nikon Imaging Cloud are really nice.
But the other day I loaded some images into Lightroom and the JPEG was looking a bit dark, so I switched to the RAW file to brighten up the exposure and thought I’d have to set the film grain within Lightroom.
I had assumed that the RAW file would be clean and not include the grain, but there in the RAW file was film grain! Initially then I thought this was something baked into the RAW files by the camera, and kind of a destructive change so to speak like putting a mist filter on your lens. However, it’s actually setting the grain within Lightroom to a specific value on the RAW file!
I captured two images one after the other with film grain on and another with film grain off. Sure enough the file with film grain had grain options set in Lightroom whereas the one I shot with film grain off had film grain set to zero! So if you shoot with film grain turned on and realize after the fact the image looks better without grain, check the grain settings on the raw file and simply set it zero!
