Juneteenth is a celebration of slaves in Texas not hearing about the Emanciaption Proclamation until about 2 years after it was published. What they also do not share is that the EP was purely a political move. The EP declared slavery illegal in southern states (not northern states). The problem with this is the southern states were no longer part of the USA so it didn’t apply to them. Can you imagine Mexico today passing a law that applies to Texas only? Texas doesn’t belong to Mexico anymore! Regardless, the EP was a PR tool to keep European countries from aligning with the Confederacy. But yes, Juneteenth is a stupid holiday…if they wanted to celebrate the end of slavery, they should have used the date that the 13th Amendment was ratified.
