There's a better test called LDL subfraction which shows a ratio of healthy and unhealthy lipoproteins.

Those lipoproteins have a surface glykoprotein called Apo B 1000, high blood sugar destroys this and without it cholesterol cant get into its target tissue due to destroyed key/lock receptors. This cholesterol with destroyed receptors is whats bad and clogs the blood vessels.
