December 21st is not just the first day of Winter. It is also Homeless Memorial Day. That day we remember those who have lost their life while trying to survive homelessness. If you know someone who tragically lost their life in the Philadelphia community while homeless, this form will help them be included in this years memorial and help our city keep count on how many lose their lives prematurely to extreme poverty.

Project Home has over $87 Million in net assets sitting according to Charity Navigator. They could build 800 homes this year in Philadelphia. But annually, they put 1/4th of their budget away to add to these assets rather than build additional housing. Those 800 units would house a majority of the reported population of unsheltered people in this city. You can do better Project Home. I am extremely disappointed right now finding this in your budget.

Free group calls are available starting today. Update your apps to the latest versions to get started. Group calls are only supported in new style Signal groups. You won’t see the call button in your legacy groups, but your legacy Signal groups will start automatically updating to New Groups in the coming weeks. Group calls are currently limited to 5 participants, but we’re working to let you have even more participants in a group call soon. We hope group calls are a helpful new way to connect!

Action Toolkit

Action Dates: December 16-18, 2020

Sponsored by: Judge Accountability Table, #No215Jail Coalition, West Philly Participatory Defense Hub, Reclaim Philadelphia, and Amistad Law Project

What’s going on: The city of Philadelphia is experiencing a surge of COVID-19, and as with all threats, the impact is all the more dire for those incarcerated in Philly's jails. As of December 5th, at least 150 people had tested positive for coronavirus, and we expect that number to grow given the jails’ notoriously unsanitary and hazardous conditions.

At the beginning of the pandemic, our movement mobilized to pressure all city officials and the courts to act quickly to free our people from the jails. The First Judicial District refused to take the necessary, urgent measures to allow mass releases. However, we took to the streets via car caravans and creative actions which forced the courts to adopt policies to quickly move emergency hearings that would facilitate releases. And after some additional advocacy by the Judge Accountability Table, we secured virtual access to the courts so we could bear witness.

Now, nine months later with this latest wave of the pandemic, there is no urgency on the part of the FJD to move emergency hearings for release of our people. And virtual courtroom access, which was always spotty at best, is essentially nonexistent or inaccessible for the public.

How to take action: Join us for a simple multi-day action.

Make your voice heard

On Wednesday, December 16, tweet at the FJD @PhilaCourts demanding they allow for mass releases and/or emergency hearings now. Take a photo of yourself holding a sign that says #FreeOurPeople #InactionIsMurder #WatchTheCourts and/or #EyesOnFJD

“More than 4000 Philadelphians are caged in death traps on State Road, as COVID rages through our city’s jails.  We demand you act now to #FreeOurPeople!”

“You stopped bringing our incarcerated neighbors to court, fearing how quickly COVID is spreading in the jails.  But you’re willing to let them sit in cages where they are completely vulnerable to a deadly disease.  Shame!  #FreeOurPeople #InactionIsMurder.”

Judges, what are you doing to protect our people from the pandemic in Philly jails? Give us virtual access to ALL hearings, we need #EyesOnFJD #FreeOurPeople

On that same day, email CourtroomPublicAccess@courts.phila.gov (and cc: courtwatch@amistadlaw.org) and request all zoom links for hearings taking place on December 17th

Sample email here

“To Whom It May Concern,

Please forward me all Zoom or other video conference links for hearings taking place on December 17, 2020 at the CJC.  The public has a right to access court proceedings, and our access is vital to ensuring accountability.”

Thank you,

Signature”

What to do if you don’t hear back by 9AM on December 17

E-mail again-sample:

“To Whom It May Concern,

I am following up on my e-mail from December 16, requesting access to Zoom or video conference links for all hearings taking place on December 17, 2020 at the CJC.  There is no justification for denying the public access to court proceedings, and, by not providing me with the requested links, you are doing just that.

Sincerely,

Signature”

Bear witness

On Thursday, December 17, if you have received zoom links, log on and watch

The current court schedule can be found here. When you log on to zoom court, remember to keep yourself muted. You may rename yourself as “Your Name--Listening Only”

Take notes on your reflections from what you witness or live tweet with #WatchTheCourts
