⚠️as of 2pm today drink and cook with bottled water only due to latex spill in water ways if you live in North, Northeast, Center City, and South Philly.⚠️
The City of Philadelphia has no plans to give away additional free water to residents due to latex contamination in our water ways yet. Latex allergy impacts approximately 6% of community members and is a progressive allergy because our bodies create antibodies when exposed. Approximately 12% of Healthcare, 17% of food, and 33% of dental workers have the allergy according to OSHA. Latex has been banned in retail and healthcare in several states but not in Pennsylvania because of the impacts the allergy has on people's access to education, healthcare, and work. Approximately 15 workplace fatalities happen a year acording to OSHA. Please make sure your neighbors have water to drink and cook with especially if you know they have a latex allergy as the city has no plans in effect to help these residents.

Note that the leak likely was synthetic latex which isn't as likely to cause allergy. However synthetic latex still contains the same natural rubber latex accelerators that also can cause allergy in patients with a latex allergy. If you react when using paint or wearing nitrile gloves, it could still potentially be an issue using water containing large concentrations of rubber accelerators from a synthetic latex contamination. Please wait for more updates from the water department. Give them a call if you have a latex allergy to let them know of the risks of allergic reaction if your water contains latex or rubber accelerators. As of now, water in potentially impacted areas is safe to drink until 11:59 PM.
Water safe to drink now through 11:59PM Monday night according to the Philadelphia Water Department.
Trinseo reported that the leak is 8100 gallons of solution made of 50% water and a remainder of a latex polymer. Their website shows their products are synthetic acrylic vinyls and don't appear to contain natural rubber latex. Acrylic vinyls sometimes emit VOC's which do cause irritation to the eyes nose and throats and are not safe for consumption. They are potentially poisonous if not used as directed. Please continue to follow updates from the water department

According the the City of Philadelphia on live stream. Intake of water at Baxter Plant was shut off Friday evening. Intake was opened again last night and testing took place after carbon filtering. There was an absence of chemicals of concern in both the river water tested outside the Baxter plant and in the water tested inside of the treatment plant. Water currently being treated at Baxter plant was taken from the river before Friday evening.
Because the water is currently being treated from stored water. We have the opportunity over the next day and a half to store water safely. Store tap water so you don't have to worry about having as much bottled water in case of a shortage. It's recommended to store at least 2 days of water
The City will need to reopen the intake to prevent damage to the water treatment plant when the stored water begins to run out. So use this time to store the tap water you can in a container with a lid.
At 12:15 a.m. Sunday morning, the intakes at the Baxter Drinking Water Treatment Plant were opened at high tide on the Delaware River and closed at approximately 5 a.m. to maintain minimum levels of water in the system. This water was tested after carbon filtering to ensure no chemicals of concern were found in water that was in the plant, as well as water they collecting outside the intake pipes
From NBC News: Officials said water quality testing in Philadelphia has been around the clock and that the latest results on Monday at 4 p.m. showed no traces of the chemical detected in the City’s water supply.
Water should be safe to drink until at least 3:30pm Tuesday as no chemicals have been found present in the city water supply.
