The chance of this strike succeeding are great if we truly band together. I’ve seen the same three concerns posted all over this subreddit since the day it was created and I began lurking and I think they need to be put to rest if we expect to take this seriously.
A Long Term Plan of Action
- A one day strike simply will not work. I’m sure many of you already know this but to someone by chance seeing this will be thinking the exact same thing. October 15th should be advertised to the public as the START of a general strike rather than a one day event in the middle of October. This is the biggest misconception with the majority of the posters and flyers that I’ve seen so far. It might gain the attention of the masses or it may not. or possibly even go barely noticied and played down as a failed attempt. Most likely it will take weeks, months, even a year before progress is seen especially on a wide scale. You can’t expect everyone to call into work or walkout on October 15th and be back on Monday morning patting each other on the back saying “Well done!” “We tried!”
If you’re planning to strike you should be prepared to be in for the long haul to see real change. The entire system needs to be slowed or halted on a mass scale.
Mutual aid funds must be set up on a local level to provide for those especially in need during the strike. If you’re planning on striking and have the ability to save money now is the time to do so. Jobs will be lost from this and that should be expected. If we’re really tired and sick of the system that keeps us chained then that should not even matter. This is the chance to be the breaking point.
Lack of Union Support
- I have seen many of us complaining about the lack of union backing behind the strike. This is to be something concerned about and certainly is valid. If I have to be the one to reach out to the unions and begin contacting them and setting up correspondence I’m more than happy to. We can’t sit around waiting for someone to make the first move. The best scenario would be for anyone reading this (the more the better) finding unions and contacting them with a formal email explaining our plans and what we look to accomplish by beginning this strike. This serves two purposes. 1. It will attract more attention to the strike and movement. 2. Legitimize the strike to the public’s eyes.
“Only 4,000 members”
- To anyone new here seeing only 4,000 members will clearly be discouraged from taking wider action especially in their local communities and cities. Sure there may be many more out there who aren’t even aware of this subreddit yet still support what we are trying to accomplish and choose to partcipate in October 15th but it simply isn’t enough. If we’re serious about this need to step up to make everyone they know aware of this strike and educate them onto the goals of what is being fought for. You can’t wait around and become complacent waiting for someone else to make these moves. Everyone participating is apart of this and loses its chance of happening the more people become complacent and assuming that they are not the ones who are responsible for spreading awareness.
We are all in this together, once we have mass awareness of the strike we actually have a huge chance at actually succeeding and for this to happen we need each and everyone of us to truly try to do as much as we can. Flyers, instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Youtube, colleges, everywhere. We need people to start talking about this and as soon as possible.

Strike protests should target corporations more than government
The best way to make this work is to demand things from corporations and organize protests outside of big corporations like Walmarts and Amazon. This will make way bigger headlines than just another protest outside the capital. Things spread like wildfire on there!!! I’m not a social media person, literally had like 5 followers on there, posted something controversial and it went viral within hours. I’m telling you, that is the social media platform we need to posting about this strike on!! Lots of likeminded people on there too. I thought it was just a bunch of stupid kids in there but no there’s a thriving anti-capitalist community. I believe lots of young people would be interested.

Need some advice
Hi,
I heard about this strike through a friend. I think it would be a great thing to happen. However, I am in an extremely unstable place in my life right now. I would like to hear some advice.
I have recently graduated college, and have been looking for work in my field of engineering non stop since last summer. After over a year of searching, I have finally found some success in a large corporation that makes computer chips, and may be starting as soon as August or September. I am also running from now until that time on the remainders of my stimulus checks that my parents did not confiscate over rent dues, about $250 that I have saved, and am living on my friends couches and in the back of a borrowed car, switching every couple weeks, due to essentially being kicked out of my parents because I have not been able to find work during the pandemic. If I run out of money, I'm basically forced to go on welfare, which I have resisted until now. This could be the point where things finally turn around for me, and I can finally start helping other people instead of always relying on them. I fear that striking indefinitely after a month or two of starting the only potential job offer I have ever had in my entire life is a bad decision for my future, including my ability to engage in activism in the future. I have refused to even consider applying for jobs at companies that go against my personal politics when it comes to the war industry and related industries. The company I am in contact with is likely one of the morally best corporations in the world, although I do not pretend that any corporation is a morally positive force for the world. I feel so ashamed that I may not stand in solidarity with a movement who desperately needs willing participants, but with my degree decaying day by day and expenses piling up, along with having zero experience at all to show to possible future employers, I feel stuck. I desperately need some advice. Thank you.

A word of caution, from a fellow comrade
I spent most of the day yesterday in the Discord server chatting and organizing with all you lovely people. Everyone is so passionate and committed! The enthusiasm is high and people are ready for change. I made the 4up flyer that currently occupies the number one post on the subreddit. I also proposed a boycott idea to also work in tandem with the strike.
The more I've had time to process everything, the more I'm hesitant. We have to realize what we're proposing. A general strike (one day or otherwise), will come with a lot of hurt. These are our fellow worker brothers and sisters, and to expect them to purposefully leave their job is a colossal ask. Our demands are extremely vague. "Healthcare"? "Environmental Regulation"? What do these mean? What are our specific asks? I strongly believe that until we know exactly what we want, we cannot ask people to leave their jobs.
None of this is tied to any bills that are currently being reviewed. The date seems to arbitrarily be drawn from a hat. Congress is currently debating the infrastructure bill - and even that's having a hard time moving through the system. We spent all of last summer protesting in the streets and almost nothing came of it. Yes, more people are aware of these awful systemic issues. But where's the change? I hope I don't come of as defeated. Far from it. I'm not saying protests and strikes do not work, but we should think critically about what outcomes we're looking to achieve. Perhaps there is a different way that would bring us closer to what we're striving for.
This is getting long winded but I'll also leave you with this - true change for all workers will not just involve "the left". The total membership of the largest socialist group in America, the DSA, still only has under 100k members. If we really want real change, we should be working to awaken all exploited workers; regardless of their political affiliation. Some of those on the right hurt just as much as we do. The system has failed them just as it failed us. This comment from a fellow redditor makes my heart sing and feels like where we should also include our energy.
I truly hope the best for the project but until we reckon with some of these questions, I will have to cheer from the sidelines.

The reason to do it, is you're still taking money from the corporation that you work for.
The reason not to, is that it's not a "strike" anymore, it's just another day I asked off.

I want to say some things that this strike has brought up in my head. These demands made are amazing. I fully support all of this. It's amazing what workers can do if they stand together and I feel that this movement can be an awakening for people. The general public doesn't see behind the scenes of workers. Nobody understands that we go to work everyday and make nothing compared to the companies. Corporations are there to make money and nothing more, that is the priority. This strike needs to be aimed at these corporations. Nobody should have to work 2-3 jobs and 80+ hours a week to simply survive and provide for family. Nobody should have to have a second job to simply afford insurance so they don't drown in debt and waste away from not getting regular check ups. Nobody working in a multi billion dollar company, not even a cart pusher, or file organizer, should be paid less than what is needed for basic amenities. I thoroughly hope this movement makes a difference. I will be standing by you and showing these companies that giving them half of my life is worth more than a measly minimum wage payment.
