Student solidarity

I saw an idea on another social media platform— people were advocating for students to skip school on October 15th, but I propose a walkout instead.

The students that make it to school will put pressure on the education system. There could be students that need rides but no buses to drive them. Students that need to eat, but with no one to cook for them. Students that need to learn, but with no one to teach them.
It could make the effects of strikings more noticeable and more burdensome on the education system.

If students walk out in solidarity, there is a chance that they’ll get mass media coverage of the event (like there was coverage of March for Our Lives). Gen Z and Gen Alpha are very good with social media management, so they would know how to make these events get noticed.

How can we organize this further?

I think that this strike could really change things. But it won’t if people only strike for a day and then go back to work. I feel like in order for this to be as successful as it can be, we need to set up a strike fund to support low income workers who can’t afford to take multiple days off and also organize picketing in major cities around the US. Maybe assign city “leaders” who can contact labor unions and activist groups, set up protests, and organize strike funds in their region. What do you guys think?

Should we develop a masterdoc comprised of answers to as many questions as possible, as well as debunks of common myths/arguments, so that people can address contentions more easily when organizing?

This is an idea I had, especially since I see a lot of people in different areas asking “how do I respond to this argument?”. Essentially it would be a google docs that had verified studies, facts, counter arguments and evidence to debunk common myths (wages are fine, minimum wage bad, etc.) while also providing easy arguments and studies. (Majority of pollution is from 100 companies, wages have been stagnant, etc.)

This could mainly be used for quick reference when trying to organize people to our side to create long lasting change.
This is just an idea I had, but it could be useful so I’m interested in hearing what everyone else thinks of it.

Is there a Facebook group? If not, there should be

You know that a majority of older working class people stick mostly to Facebook for their source of news and happenings. In order for this strike to work we need to reach the older demographic, too.

We need to advertise the Facebook group around, mention it on flyers (is a QR code a thing for Facebook groups?) And generally appeal to the more unreasonable "Healthcare?? That's socialism! Socialism bad!!1!" kind of people, because they are largely made of working class people and getting screwed just as much as we are.

I feel a strong Facebook group could go a long way in securing some kind of change, and is a good way to reach the older working people who's seen the decline in working conditions.

The biggest hit could be to tie in a boycott of Christmas based consumerism... Buy groceries when you need.... But definitely skip black Friday and other big sale days...

Podcast idea

I was thinking about doing a podcast series in support of the strike. Doing an episode of each of the main issue prevailing our time(economic inequality, corporate lobbying, prison retribution etc.)
1. Would you think the organizers of the strike would mind?
2. Do you have any suggestions of guests to talk to about these various topics?

With the rocky situation on the Discord, now is a good time remind everyone that every grassroots movement needs to diversify their orgnizational participation! Check out the Gravitas Digital Collective space to connect with other organizers and activists!

I'm making more graphics. Where to share them?

I'm making additional infographics and flyers, like on the website, specifically formatted for different social media platforms like Insta stories, Facebook cover photos, etc.

Where should I share or send these? Upload them here? Make my own website?

Serious questions to all who are involved in the October strikes to increase wages. What about people like me in skilled positions? If you believe unskilled wages should be raised, what about people in skilled positions?

Other Social media platforms?

Is there a Facebook group for this yet?

French Translation

I have a lot of native French speakers in my area. Had anyone made French translations of posters yet? I have Spanish flyers ready, I just want to cover my bases.

The American Youth Workers Coalition is interested in this strike, and we want to achieve stronger demands and union participation. We are an 8,700 member strong group on Facebook, who have as our primary goal the empowerment of the working class.

One Modification to the Demands

It might be a good idea to change the "25% Corporate Tax" to "25% Minimum Corporate Tax" akin to the Alternative Minimum Tax. Might make a clearer demand and marks a point at which the corpos can't weasel out of paying their taxes.

@Octoberstrike
Stop it with the "15% Corporate Tax" that is RIDICULOUSLY LOW

The "15% Corporate Tax" that is RIDICULOUSLY LOW. I am tired of seeing this 15% Corporate Tax slogan on General Strike posters. I realize some corporations pay nothing, so it would be an increase for them, but the US corporate tax rate is currently 21 PERCENT.

You are protesting for a LOWER corporate tax rate, which was near 40% only 4 years ago in the USA.

This strike has to be CLEAR about messaging, that protesing for LOWER CORPORATE TAXES IS INTOLERABLE!

How do we know if the strike goals are met?

These are the strike goals, but how do we determine they've been met and the strike can end? Congress must pass a bill, and the president must then also pass it?

25% corporate tax rate (No loopholes)
Universal Healthcare for all
12 weeks paid parental leave
$20/hr minimum wage
4 day work week
Net zero emissions by 2030

Has any union decided to join this yet?

I curious if any have joined or not, has anyone approached them? Or members and have them ask their leadership?
