A very odd thing happened at 3am this morning... my local power utility frequency dropped to just below 59hz and that caused my inverter to go off-grid. The voltage also rose a little bit but not out of spec.
FWIW, utility grids have to run the frequency a little high or a little low each day, usually in the morning hours to make up for gained or lost 60hz cycles thru the day. Guess they took it a little too low tonight.

When setting up a generator, set the RPM to 3720rpm (3600rpm unit) or 1860rpm (1800rpm) unit. Most mechanics have a tach but not a volt meter with a frequency function. What you are looking for is 62hz-62.5hz.
Another thing worth noting is that most generators do NOT have a set of contactors to drop the load when you switch them off. The problem is that when you kill them with a load on them as they spool down the armature current spikes and will burn up things inside as it tries to keep making 120/240v. It also makes for a very unstable AC waveform in your house and may damage some of your equipment.
On my onan pad mounted generator, I put a contactor inline with the 240v from the genset that energizes on the start wire. So when the start signal drops, so does this contactor.
Here's a snippet from an onan manual about setting the rpm of the generator.
