EDIT: someone in the comments on youtube said to leave the top sealed up and put an exhaust vent at the bottom... teh warm air will rise thru the center and displace cooler air to the bottom. By exhausting out the bottom you maximaize the warming effect inside the box.

Some of you young'uns may not appreciate this, but I've been taking some boron pills each day and the stiffness in my back is about gone. I've gone from leaning on the bedpost to put my pants on one leg at a time to stepping into my pants. A doctor would have given me an anti inflamitory or some pain med. You can choose 12 or 24v. Since 48v is the new standard for most inverters you can use a golf cart battery converter for $20 to run this thing from 48v.

Does solar work? A guy over on the DIY Solar forum reports his power company says: "Low usage alert at xxxxxxxxx, Your recent average daily usage has been 16kwh per day. However , your daily usage from 9/21 to 9/23 was 3 kwh, 2 kwh, 2kwh.....find ways to save energy with energy manager visit at xxxxx"

Seems the power company noticed his usage is down to 2kwh a day.

There is an additional factor one must consider when spec'ing a solar system. Wives and daughters. Has it been overcast for the past two days? Sure, let's run the oven after sundown. Look how steep the discharge is last night. We baked bread in the oven and made toast in the toaster oven.

In truth, right now it is not an issue. However when the grid is down and/or you gotta run a generator it is a real issue. No laundry after sundown, no oven.

So a local guy around here bought a Champion skid mounted LP generator from Practical Preppers a handful of years ago. Nothing against Scott there, but this generator has zero warranty if used off grid. And now we know why....

Generator 1: 750 hours started using a lot of oil and smoking.

Generator 2: 120 hours and sheared the end of the crank off so it won't turn the alternator.

He's back running the first one until he can get a military MEP803.

Remember folks, always set your generators to idle at 62hz (3720rpm North America) or 52hz (3120rpm EU). The reason is that solar inverters will sense 62hz and make less or no power. As the generator bogs down with a load and gets to 60hz (or 50hz) the solar inverters will kick in and help. But if you idle at 60hz (50hz) the inverters will make all the power they can and potentially back feed your generator and blow it up.
