Gov. Hochul expanded Thursday on her announcement that she was looking to award temporary visas for foreign nationals to replace health workers who refuse to get the jab:

“This is a conversation we have already been having – to talk about the opportunities we might have in freeing up the visa system to have some temporary workers come from places like the Philippines, where many nurses go elsewhere. […] It is going to be a Dept. of State process. This will not help in the next couple of days.”

Nearly 20% of workers at hospitals and nursing homes in NY are unvaccinated – the state’s mandate goes into effect next Monday.

China Flexes Military Muscles Sending 24 Fighter Jets Towards Taiwan

24 fighter jets punched toward the island in a display of force Thursday, after Taipei announced its wishes to join an 11-nation Pacific trade group that China also applied to join.

The PLA buzzed Taiwan twice Thursday, once in the morning with 19 jets, and in the afternoon with five more. Taiwan tracked the jets on its air defense systems and deployed air patrol forces, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

China has has sent large displays of fighter jets over the island after political events which it views as interfering with its sovereignty as Beijing claims Taiwan as part of the country’s territory.
