Sri Lanka declares FOOD EMERGENCY as forex crisis stops imports (Report)

Long queues to buy milk powder, sugar, and cooking oil have been reported up and down Sri Lanka amid rising Covid-19 cases and a 16-day curfew.

Sri Lanka’s central banks increased interest rates to 6% a fortnight ago to shore up local currency before printing 29 BILLION Sri Lankan rupees in an apparent attempt to repay foreign debt. Printing money leads to an immediate loss of forex reserves – the country with a further two payments of $1.5bn each still due this year.
