Read Mark chapter 12

28-34 One of the scribes asked Jesus, “What commandment is the foremost of all?”

When Jesus saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”

This whole chapter in Mark Jesus is being questioned about the law by Pharisees and Herodians (Idumeans) trying to trap him. Jesus outsmarts them and answers every single one of their questions in a manner in which they can’t even return a rebuttal. Then this scribe comes and asks him the question that summarizes the whole point Jesus was trying to make. As the Pharisees and Herodians tried to manipulate tough questions and scenarios in the law they missed the whole point of why the law was there in the first place - to remind people what sin is. As Jesus says, they are constantly going around hypocritically pointing out others’ wrong doing and they are so busy trying to trap people in committing sin that they missed the point of God’s love.

This scribe afterward rightly nails it- love God with all your heart, mind, and soul, then love your neighbor the same as you love yourself. If you can do those two things then not only did you not break any of the other laws but you captured the true intention of life- to love.

Remember this as we try to reach our goals of uniting our nation! If you ever expect to unite you must use love, not hate. Then should we humble ourselves and pray and seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways, then God will hear from heaven, will forgive our sin and will heal our land.

Disagree all you want.
