Lab-Grown Meat Startup Gets the FDA’s Stamp of Approval

Cultivated meat has been approved for sale in the United States for the first time. The decision by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) means that a company called Upside Foods will soon be able to sell chicken made from real animal cells grown in bioreactors instead of requiring the slaughter of live animals.

Bill Gates has been a repeat investor in Upside Foods and most recently participated in the $400m Series C round.

Gates is also the largest farmland owner in the United States, owning 242,000 acres totaling $690m in assets. He’s also heavily influenced the narrative against animal agriculture and steering consumers towards plant-based meat alternatives.

'Masks reduce racism’ study is latest sign US medical establishment is insanely, perilously woke.

A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine purports to show that mask policies in schools work to contain COVID. But that’s not all: The authors conclude, “We believe that universal masking may be especially useful for mitigating effects of structural racism in schools, including potential deepening of educational inequities.”

Sure, masks help fix structural racism. Why not? And the next study will show masking fights climate change.

FDA Says Telling People Not To Take Ivermectin For COVID-19 Was "Just A Recommendation"

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) telling people to “stop” taking ivermectin for COVID-19 was informal and just a recommendation, government lawyers argued during a recent hearing.

“The cited statements were not directives. They were not mandatory. They were recommendations. They said what parties should do. They said, for example, why you should not take ivermectin to treat COVID-19. They did not say you may not do it, you must not do it. They did not say it’s prohibited or it’s unlawful. They also did not say that doctors may not prescribe ivermectin,” Isaac Belfer, one of the lawyers, told the court during the Nov. 1 hearing in federal court in Texas.

“They use informal language, that is true,” he also said, adding that, “it’s conversational but not mandatory.”

The FDA created a webpage in 2021 noscriptd “Why You Should Not Use Ivermectin to Treat or Prevent COVID-19” and later posted a link to the page on Twitter while writing: “You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it.” A second post stated: “Hold your horses, y’all. Ivermectin may be trending, but it still isn’t authorized or approved to treat COVID-19.”

In a separate page, the FDA said: “Q: Should I take ivermectin to prevent or treat COVID-19? A: No.”

Those actions interfered with the doctors’ practice of medicine, violating the laws including the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the lawsuit alleges.

UK to launch new digital ID technology next month as part of nationwide digital ID push

The UK government is pushing ahead with its nationwide digital ID plans, despite half of the responses to its public consultation on digital identity opposing the idea.

The government’s digital ID plans were announced in the same month that the UK government’s Online Safety Bill began its legislative journey. This bill mandates the implementation of identity and age verification technology on many large online platforms.

This current attempt to introduce digital ID comes almost a decade after the UK government launched its 2013 digital ID project “Verify” which was blasted by the National Audit Office and internal Parliamentary committees for “failing the public” and missing all of its performance targets.

Rishi Sunak has urged the NHS to embrace the use of robots as the health service prepares to cut its workforce by half in a drastic attempt to cut costs.

Growing NHS waiting lists have left a record 2.5m people unable to work because of long-term sickness, with an extra 133,000 people falling out of the workforce for health reasons in the three months to September alone.

Homes with smart meters are being moved to pay as you go plans without consent and plunged into darkness - by remote control.

Thanks to the high-tech devices - which show your energy usage in real time and send meter readings automatically to suppliers - energy firms can switch customers on to different tariffs remotely.

And, crucially, if a household does not pay, gets into debt or fails to pay bills on time, the supplier can use a smart meter to turn off their power. All it takes is the click of a button in an office hundreds of miles away.

By the end of this winter, consumer charity Citizens Advice estimates 180,000 households will have been switched to prepayment plans via their smart meter.

The widespread adoption of smart meters means companies no longer have to come face-to-face with the people they are cutting off.

The solution here? Resist getting one.

Ofcom ‘will get more power than spies’ to monitor apps

Ofcom is being given authority under the Online Safety Bill to force tech companies to crack down on terrorism and child abuse content on private messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram and Signal.

These services are “end-to-end” encrypted, meaning that only the users know the content of messages, not the platforms. Under the bill, however, the regulator would be able to order companies to use technology to scan messages to root out terrorism or child abuse. A failure to comply would result in a fine of up to 10 per cent of the company’s worldwide revenue.

The powers granted to Ofcom “permits the state to compel [tech firms] to carry out surveillance of the content of communications on a generalised and widespread basis”, Matthew Ryder, a human rights barrister, said in a legal opinion commissioned by Index on Censorship, a free speech organisation.

Ofcom would not need prior authorisation for issuing a demand for scanning messages and there is no independent oversight of such powers, Ryder said. This means that Ofcom would be able to act more freely than GCHQ does, which has a far more limited power of surveillance governed by the Investigatory Powers Act.
