A " prayer nut" was an intricately detailed and extravagantly carved boxwood box carving made to be carried around the waist or neck by its user. When opened, elaborate noscriptural scenes were depicted to encourage the owners spiritual walk. As they were extremely costly, only the wealthy could afford them, and they became a status symbol as much as a sign of faith. Dating back to the Middle Ages, they are considered highly prized pieces of art and can be found in the world's leading museums today.
