🇬🇧🇺🇸 NEW COLLEGE OXFORD - JOHNS HOPKINS CENTRE FOR COSMOLOGICAL STUDIES 🇺🇸🇬🇧


FUNDING FOR POSTDOC/POSTGRAD TRAVEL TO OXFORD, IAP AND JHU


These grants are intended to support travel by postdocs, research fellows and final year postgrads to work with a wide range of staff at Oxford, the Institut d’Astrophysique in Paris, and at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Travel to Paris or Baltimore can be for trips of duration ranging from 2 weeks to 2 months. Applications are welcome from anyone whose work is connected to cosmology in a very broad sense.


Visits to Oxford are intended to cover the substantial part of a term, normally 6-8 weeks, and include visiting membership of the New College Senior Common Room.


Typical awards cover flights, accommodation and a substantial contribution to living costs.

Abstract

In this talk, I will present aspects of 2D scalar-tensor theories. First, I will construct a 2D bi-scalar gravity from a 4D Horndeski theory using a Kaluza-Klein (KK) dimensional reduction on a 2-sphere. I will then provide some identities to write the action in a more compact form and use these to develop a more generalized 2D bi-scalar theory. Following this, I will use the KK reduction process to map 4D Horndeski solutions to 2D bi-scalar theory solutions.
In the second half of the talk, I will explore the single-scalar version of the 2D bi-scalar gravity. I will discuss how some important 2D single-scalar theories may have a 4D origin. I will then investigate the relationship between some key 2D single-scalar tensor theories, explaining how the 2D Horndeski theory and GRZ model can be derived from JT gravity using disformal transformation.

Abstract

We revisit entanglement wedge reconstruction in AdS/CFT using the Petz recovery channel. In the case of a spherical region on the boundary, we show that the Petz map reproduces the AdS-Rindler HKLL reconstruction. Moreover, for a generic subregion of the boundary, we could obtain the same boundary representation of a local bulk field lies in the entanglement wedge as the one proposed earlier in JLMS paper using properties of the modular flow.

روز شنبه ۲۷ مرداد ماه (فردا)، ساعت ۱۰-۱۲ صبح، در فضای مجازی سخنرانی و گپ و گفتی با عنوان «زنان تاثیرگذار در فیزیک ذرات» خواهیم داشت. طبعا سخنرانی را با یادی از خانواده کوری ها آغاز خواهیم کرد. سپس یادی از امی نوتر خواهیم نمود. از ماریا گوپرت مایر یاد کرده، به آزمایش «وو» خواهیم پرداخت. با توجه به این که هفته گذشته، تی-دی-لی جان به جان آفرین تسلیم کرد، به سهم ایشان به همراه سی-ان-ینگ در کشف نقض پاریته نیزاشاره خواهیم کرد. سپس به میلا بالدو و دستاوردهای علمی او و نیز دستاوردهای همنسلان او برای حقوق زنان خواهیم پرداخت.

در خلال بحث ها، به نکات و کلیشه هایی خواهیم پرداخت که زنان و مردان در جامعه دانشگاهی ایران-به خصوص در جامعه فیزیک ایران- با آنها درگیرند. امیدواریم با ایجاد هشیاری در این زمینه زنان و مردان جوان را که قدم در راه مسیر طولانی کارهای پژوهشی نهاده اند از درگیر شدن با حاشیه های بی ثمر باز داریم.

The Two-Nucleon 1S0 Amplitude Zero in Chiral Effective Field Theory

Abstract:

Recently, a new rearrangement of short-range interactions has been suggested in the 1S0 nucleon-nucleon channel within Chiral Effective Field Theory. This is intended to reproduce the amplitude zero at leading order, and it includes subleading corrections perturbatively in a way that is consistent with renormalization-group invariance. Systematic improvement is shown at next-to-leading order, the obtained results have been fitted empirical phase shifts remarkably well all the way up to the pion-production threshold. An approach in which pions have been integrated out is included, which allows us to present analytic results that also fit phenomenology surprisingly well.

Title:

Solar neutrinos and leptonic spin forces

Abstract:

In this talk, I quantify the effects of light spin-zero particles with pseudoscalar couplings to leptons and scalar couplings to nucleons on the evolution of solar neutrinos. I show in this scenario the matter potential sourced by the nucleons in the Sun’s matter gives rise to spin precession of the relativistic neutrino ensemble. For Dirac neutrinos, the spin-flavour precession results in active-sterile oscillations, while for Majorana neutrinos it results in left-handed neutrino to right-handed antineutrino oscillations. In both cases, this leads to distortions in the solar neutrino spectrum which we use to derive constraints on the allowed values of the mediator mass and couplings via a global analysis of the solar neutrino data. In addition for Majorana neutrinos, spin-flavour precession results into a potentially observable flux of solar electron antineutrinos at the Earth which we quantify and constrain with the existing bounds from Borexino and KamLAND.

Abstract

In the Standard Model at high temperatures, anomalous effects contribute to the violation of baryon number ($B$) and lepton number ($L$), separately, while $B-L$ remains conserved. There are also corresponding changes in the helicity of the hypermagnetic field ($h$) and the Chern-Simons numbers of the non-Abelian gauge fields ($N_{\rm CS,W}$ and $N_{\rm CS,S}$). In this study, we investigate a baryogenesis process in the symmetric phase of the early Universe by taking into account the Abelian and non-Abelian anomalous effects as well as the perturbative chirality-flip processes of all fermions. We calculate explicitly the time evolution of all relevant physical quantities, including those of $h$ and $N_{\rm CS,W}$, and show that there is another conserved global charge involving total matter-antimatter asymmetry $B+L$, hypermagnetic helicity $h_B$ and $N_{\rm CS,W}$.
The course outline: Quantum Field Theory I, Fall 2024


This is an introductory course on quantum field theory (QFT). QFT is a fundamental requirement in the studies of theoretical high energy physics, particle physics and early universe cosmology. It is a vast and well-established subject with applications in many branches of theoretical physics and cosmology. There are many textbooks on QFT, old and new. In this course we will mainly follow the book by Peskin & Schroeder (Perseus Books, 1995). This is an excellent book, emphasizing on various aspects of QFT, both at the level of formalisms and applications. There are other useful books which may be consulted as well. For example, the book by Schwartz (Cam- bridge University Press, 2014) is very useful as well. The QFT book by Steven Weinberg (Cambridge University Press, volume I, 1995) is an excellent reference for deeper under- standings of various topics in QFT. However, because of its high level of presentation, it is not suggested as a regular text book for a first time study in QFT. This is a three-unit course. Our goal is to cover most of part I of Peskin & Schroeder, chapters 1-7.

🇨🇭PhD position in Planetary Atmospheres at ETH Zürich🇨🇭

Job Denoscription

The successful candidate will develop numerical models based on experiments using an aerodynamic laser-heated levitation furnace to simulate atmospheric escape in the laboratory. Velocimetry measurements will be performed in order to describe the flow of gases around a molten bead in a fluid dynamical framework. Isotopic analyses of the residues of atmospheric loss are to be undertaken to establish the pressures at the surface of the bead. These constraints will be used to develop a 3D model of atmospheric loss from planetary bodies.

بعد از آشکارسازی امواج گرانشی، شاید در آینده نزدیک چشم‌مان به آشکارسازی «امواج ماده تاریک» روشن شود:
Searching for dark matter with a 1000 km baseline interferometer

در این پژوهش به جستجوی ماده تاریک با استفاده از یک نوع تداخلسنجی با خط پایه 1000 کیلومتری پرداخته شده است. اصول کار این تداخلسنج شبیه شبکه تداخلسنج های امواج رادیویی، مانند تلسکوپ افق رویداد است، با این تفاوت که این تداخلسنج به امواج ماده تاریک حساس است، نه امواج الکترومغناطیس. کوچکترین طول موج دوبروی که در این پژوهش جستجو شده است بیش از هزار برابر بزرگتر از شعاع زمین است!

در این پژوهش از دو هم‌مغناطیسسنج اتمی K-Rb-3He استفاده شده است که یکی در ماینتس آلمان و دیگری در کراکوف لهستان قرار دارد. این تداخلسنج برای بررسی برهمکنش بین ماده تاریک شبه-اکسیونی و نوکلئونها طراحی شده است. جستجو در محدوده نه مرتبه بزرگی در جرم ماده تاریک اکسیونی انجام شده است. و البته در این محدوده، هیچ شواهد قابل توجهی از سیگنال این نوع ماده تاریک یافت نشده است.
