Tributes to Dorset's sustainable fisherman David Sales who was honoured by the Queen
Tributes have been paid to a West Bay fisherman who was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his services to commercial fishing and the environment.
David Sales spent 63 years in the fishing industry and worked to promote more sustainable practices, including policy to increase the minimum size of lobsters caught so that they could breed before capture.
In 2020 he told Fishing News: "Not long after introducing the regulation, we started catching berried female lobsters – a wonderful sight. At last, the lobster stock was being given a chance to recover."
In many traditional industries that have survived for countless generations, this attitude is starting to become rarer and rarer. People like Mr. Sales who have devoted their lives to their work and for leaving behind a sea that is available to fish in for the next generations are unsung heroes.
It’s not just that he was a provider for his family and for his community, he was able to think for the long-term health of his job and his country and do what he could to leave something behind. If everyone had his attitude, our country wouldn’t have even half of the problems that is has now.

The "White British" are already a minority in many towns and cities in the UK, including our capital city, London.
Oxford Professor of Demographics, David Coleman, concludes that we are due to reach minority status in the UK by 2066, or sooner.

Blaze which ripped through Exmoor 'started deliberately'
A blaze which ripped through Exmoor woodland at the weekend is believed to have been started deliberately. Multiple fire crews from Somerset and Devon were called to the blaze at Hawkridge on Exmoor on Saturday evening (March 26).
Teams from Bampton Fire Station along with other appliances from Dulverton Fire Station, South Molton Fire Station, Lynton Fire Station, Tiverton Fire Station and Porlock Fire Station battled for hours to bring the blaze under control.
Yet more suspicious fires, yet more investigations which will always somehow lead to dead ends, yet more destruction of our countryside. If you think that we have seen an increase in fires that just happen to keep starting at opportune moments in the past few years, you aren’t crazy- there has been a marked increase.
Almost like they want to set a precedent of keeping “dangerous arsonists” away from the countryside so they can keep up indoors and in the bigger towns and cities, eh?

1769, birth of Thomas Lawrence in Bristol, famous portrait painter of the early modern period, his works include the famous portrait of the Duke of Wellington. Eventually, he would become Sir Thomas Lawrence, one of Bristol's most famous artists.
1771,Richard Trevithick, Cornish engineer was born. The son of a mining captain, he performed poorly in school, but went on to be an early pioneer in steam-powered rail. Trevithick built the first full-scale working railway steam locomotive, called the 'Coalbrookdale Locomotive' in 1802. This replica is at Blists Hill Museum in Shropshire. He also built road locomotives including 'the Puffing Devil'. It was one of the world's first steam powered road vehicles to carry passengers. His working puffing devil was pioneered a full decade before Stevenson's rocket, meaning Trevithick was the true father of the railway.
