On this day, 1816:
A collection of poems by Samuel Coleridge are published, including his epic 'Kublai Khan' and 'Rhyme of the ancient mariner'.
Coleridge was born in Ottery St Mary and spent most of his life in the South West. He was a contempory of Lord Byron and the two frequently exchanged letters about their thoguths and views of the changing country they were living through in the late 18th and early 19th century. A lot of his works came from when he was a doing ministerial work in Taunton, the Rhyme of the ancient mariner was written when Coleridge was living and around Watchet, in west Somerset.
Considered one of the pioneers of the Romantic age, Coleridge suffered the fate of sadly one too many great artists: unhealthy addiction to drugs and gradual failing health meant that he would not live much past 60. He died in Middlesex, after a long battle with illness.

Actually it's RIME of the ancient mariner and refers to the frost on his beard. Cheers

It's on people who vote Tory to explain this. The old ''To keep Labour out'' waffle isn't going to cut it anymore when after 12 years of Tory rule immigration is 5x (!) higher than what is was under Tony Fucking Blair.

They imported a city the size of Liverpool in a single year, and that's only the ones we know about.

This weekend, some of our members went to the astoundingly beautiful Silbury hill in Wiltshire for a hike and a banner drop.

Silbury hill is the largest man-made earth mounds in Europe. When you think of how far back it dates and the level of intensity and dedication that our ancestors would have had to put into making this, it boggles the mind they did it without the aid of technology.

After the hike and banner drop, our lads got themselves a well-deserved lunch and a quick pint.

The South West is doing more and more activity with each passing month and our membership is growing. If you've been thinking of joining and meeting those who are engaged in the struggle, there is no greater time than now.

If you'd like to attend future events and be a part of this great movement, you can email us at southwest@patrioticalternative.org.uk

On this day, 1840:

The birth of Thomas Hardy in Dorchester, Dorset. Hardy is widely regarded as one of the giants of the Romantic movement and was very critical of the Victorian era and the decline in quality of life of the rural communities as the Industrial revolution went on around them, taking much needed young families from their ancient homes and into the cities.

His greatest literary success was 'Far from the maddening crowds' which deals with the harsher realities of life in rural England.

In his later years, he would write about both the Boer war and First world war, regretful of the loss of life on both sides. He died in 1928 in his native Dorchester.

On this day, 1944...

The Allies invade Normandy

As the number of men who fought in D-day dwindles to zero, it is worth remembering whether you believe the war just or not, the country that the men who invaded the beaches of Normandy fought for no longer exists.

In 1944, England was a homogeneous, healthy, strong nation, despite the 5 years of war and the suffering it had inflicted on the country. Men were not "fighting fascism" so they could watch themselves be made minorities in their own home towns, for their children and grandchildren to be displaced and bear the new original sin of being White, for their friends and loved ones to be killed on the front and at home so that their country could spend thousands of lives and billions of treasure fighting for their future extinction.

This morning, Patriotic Alternative South West were out doing a litter pick around the parks of Taunton, cleaning the park of litter and enjoying the (mostly) great weather.

One such place was a rat pack of years’ worth of bottles, cigarette packets, cans, papers, and wrappers. Despite the cramped crawl, PA members were able to get in and out of the gaps and even recovered a broken bicycle tire.

With the park and its surrounding area cleaned, we filled the bin bags to the brim and concluded our work. Afterwards, we let the nearby locals know who had gone out of their way to clean their park.

Finally, we all got ourselves a quick drink and had a good, friendly chat.

Patriotic Alternative South West are keeping busy and this month will be no exception, so if you’d like to join you can email us at southwest@patrioticalternative.org.uk
