Dalmatian Pelicans have made a come back to the UK!
With a wingspan of up to 11.5 ft, the largest freshwater bird on the planet is the most recent addition to the British Ornithologist’s Wild Bird Register following rewilding efforts across UK wetlands.
As a native British bird, Dalmatian Pelicans were hunted to extinction in the UK around 2,000 years ago.

Guesswork in Medicine
When you go to the doctor for help and treatment you probably assume that once he has decided what is wrong with you the doctor will automatically give you a treatment that is quite specific for your disease.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
With a very few exceptions there are no certainties in medicine. What you will get will depend more on chance and your doctor’s personal prejudices than on science.
This problem isn’t a new one, of course.
In the preface to The Doctor’s Dilemma, playwright George Bernard Shaw pointed out that during the first great epidemic of influenza which developed towards the end of the nineteenth century, a London evening newspaper sent a journalist posing as a patient to all the great consultants of the day.

Today we held the first North Wales meeting for PA Wales. There were seven activists there and another two had planned to come but couldn’t make it.
We spent lunch time drinking coffee and socialising, discussing what we wanted to achieve with the group.
It was decided that we should do one cultural activity and one banner drop at each meeting, take leaflets home to deliver and each try to bring another activist to the next meeting, which we decided should be monthly at first.
Today’s cultural activity was a visit to an expansive medieval Church, covered with corbels and gargoyles, as well as intricately detailed stained glass windows.
The church had many sculpted instances of the green man, with a king with foliage springing forth from his mouth and ears, one man covered in leaves and another with leaves sprouting out all around his head like a lion’s mane.
There was also a mermaid that looked like an old fertility symbol that had been changed to be less lewd.
All showed a sense of continuity between pre-Christian British beliefs and the traditional Church, charting the growth of our culture over three millennia.
The outside of the Church had too many gargoyles to count among the Gothic spires, all being made from sandstone which had unfortunately been darked by soot from the factory chimneys of the industrial era.
The next activists day out will take place in a month’s time in the North Wales area and will include a cultural outing and some physical activity, ending with a barbecue and possible camping overnight.
